freerepublic | 6/5/2015 | greeneyes

Posted on 06/05/2015 12:57:35 PM PDT by greeneyes

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks.

No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table(recipes)preserving, good living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.

I will thin as well if it doesn't self thin but for some reason it has grown more this year than I can remember. It might very well be because winter before I didn't get it covered and it died back almost all the way to the ground. Last year it put on plenty of new growth but nary a single lemon.

It's now well over 8 feet high and about as wide, not as big as some Meyers I've seen but still getting up there.

Hehe, now I'm wondering how I'm gonna get it covered this winter if need be....it's always something.

Life is good, and homegrown veggies are good eats. I think it was just last week, but I’m not sure. I am a memory challenged person, but you haven’t been here long enough to know that. LOL

Maybe you could just stack up some straw instead of hilling? You dodged a bullet with the hail that’s for sure. Sounds like ya’ll could use a little break in the rain and some sunshine to dry it up a bit.

Hope all settles down soon. Stay safe.

My little tree is more of a bush. Only about 18” tall and tends to grow out ward rather than upward. If we get a green house, it might do better.

It’s too tall to do directly under the grow light. It gets quite a lot of sun during the day, but in the winter, the days are short, and it only gets the peripheral light from the grow lamp.

Well, we’ll be 2 peas in a pod, because my memory is bad too, LOL!

I get to water the next few days - no rain. Funny how I’ve come to LOVE the mornings and evenings I get to water. It is SO relaxing to spend time with my new green friends. My dog loves it too - now that he’s figured out NOT to dig in the garden or lay on the plants!

Hi everyone. This is mom3boys, the one that likes to grow Asian veggies :-)

Been AWOL from the garden list for a while as far as posting, but I’ve been reading faithfully every week, enjoying everyone’s posts and pictures, and praying for Johnny.

It’s June in Phoenix, so barely any planting outside to be done - just enjoying the harvests from my veggies put in the ground in February.

I have some indoor gardening ideas I want to try, especially microgreens and more hydroponics.

Truly, the outdoors can be a very potent anti-depressant. LOL

With some of my beds, I get to lay the hose down and walk around the yard, so I get my exercise done too. My potato bed has been inundated with a bunch of volunteer tomatoes and a melon vine of some sort.

I think it needed to be thinned a month ago, but it’s hard to choose to rip out perfectly good plants. LOL

When you get going on those ideas, please fill us in on the details, successes, and problems encountered. Some of us (me for sure) are looking for ways to improve our indoor gardens that we use in the winter.

Here are my bean babies after just one week of having their posts in. Last week I posted a picture of them having a tendril may be one or two times around. Now they've grown beyond the top of the poles, and now I need to go get taller ones!

I feel the same way about everything you said. Once I get outside, all my problems disappear. And I also can't stand to just throw the little seedlings into the grass when I have too many, so I found new places to plant them. Give me a few years, and my garden will take over the whole 13 acres of pasture! Forget having cows or goats :-)

I don't know what the previous owner did, but I have little baby tomatoes showing up everywhere. Is that pretty normal then? I thought he was eating tomatoes and throwing the seeds in the flower beds or something. Of course, I am letting those grow as well. I even transplanted some that were too close together. I have no idea what kind they will be, so it will be a nice surprise.

We appreciate the invite, but I don’t think we’re gonna make it that far north this trip. We’re headed to San Doggio to see #2 Son in the morning.

Please add me to your ping list.

I am planting potatoes for the first time. I got them from Seed Savers. I planted them one foot apart, per the directions. Now I have some multiple plants coming up where I planted one potato. It's just two or three plants in a one-potato hole. Is this normal? And how will I know when the potatoes are ripe for plucking?

The mule ride to the river and back is on my bucket list.

Next time maybe.

A seed potato does that RR. Some of them can be very robust ~

Beautiful picture. Thanks for sharing. Maybe squirrels or some other critter got into the tomatoes and seeds wound up scattered.

Or maybe he had moving compost heaps or something. Hubby’s compost heap is somewhere new every year.
