IIRC, our military imported camels at some point. It didn’t work out.

Not large enough a herd, at least in Arizone where the last one was spotted in 1939, if I recall correctly.
Actually the camel experiment worked very well, but the person who authorized it was then Secretary of war, Jefferson Davis.
