Weird Stuff In Black and White TV Shows [vanity]
radiodiscussions.com ^ | Oscar Madison [a poster on the linked site]

Doctors smoke.

Drivers get into cars on the passenger side and slides across the front seat instead of walking around. Exception: A male driver with a female passenger. They both get in on the drivers' side. She gets in first but only slides halfway across.

Cops shoot fleeing unarmed suspects. If a civilian is shot during a pursuit, the cop doesn't bother stopping to render aid or call an ambulance; they keep chasing the suspect (of course, assumed to be guilty).

To make sure everyone knows his or her place, formal and familiar modes of address (and reference) are rigidly used.

Black people are always servants and servile (except on Amos 'n' Andy).

When "stuff" happens, women scream. A guy has to handle it for them.

Busy signals.

Convertibles with the top down in apparently cold weather (people bundled up or wearing heavy coats and hats).

Western marshals don't make arrests; they have duels with bad guys and given them the chance to draw and fire first. Cops aren't much better; they approach armed suspects without drawing a weapon, allowing the suspect fire at them so they can have a dramatic shoot-out.

Despite the fact that Roman Catholics are less than a quarter of the US population, about 90 per cent of TV clergy are priests.

You seldom see a TV in the homes of TV families.

It only takes a quick kiss or peck on the lips to make teenage boys happy.

TV homes have table radios with future technology (they don't need to warm up). And when turned on, a news story or announcement relevant to the plot is heard immediately.

Doctors make house calls. Nobody worries about the cost of health care.

Wives are younger and better looking than their husbands.

Women can't walk by themselves; guys must grab an elbow and steer them.

Bathrooms don't have toilets.

People drink coffee with every meal. (You'd think they'd need those toilets.)

Any others?

Bundling up and driving a convertable in cold weather and the top down, with the heater on if needed, is something I have enjoyed doing since I was a kid and my father had one. Its actually a quite pleasant experience. Driving in heat is more likely to see me put the top up.

If the hero gets shot, it’s always in the shoulder or something, and a minor flesh wound.

When teenagers would be playing records and dancing, it would be to jazzy instrumental music that was supposed to represent “these crazy kids today and their crazy music.”

All adults were trustworthy and a kid with a flat tire on his bike could accept a ride from some strange grownup and not think twice about it.

You're right. I forgot about that show.

And Ralph Kramden of the Homeymooners was a bus driver.

“You seldom see a TV in the homes of TV families.” Well you seldom see those in sitcoms watching TV. Unless they are idiots.. The Simpsons, Family Guy, Married With Children

Ajax also had a “cleans like a White Tornado” ad. I remember one or both these being suggested as ‘racist.’

Yes you did say BW tv shows. But my point was TV on more current TV. :)

What I do object to are single mothers who are so liberated they don’t need a man to help raise a child. Or in some cases they don’t even know who the baby daddy is. Or fathers who skip out of their obligations and are nowhere to be found in their children’s lives.

Then there are some who hook up with a loser who abuses/kills their child.

Women were in the kitchen wearing pearls.
The kids were scrub clean and not sassing back except that Opie kid who kept throwing rocks at people at the lake.....
Cars were HUGE with tailfins.
Suit and ties no matter how hot it must have been.
No A/C
People were in better shape and not Wal-Mart size.
Dialog you could listen to for the most part. The shows were better written. You did not cringe like you do with today’s shows written by lazy writers.
When color tv came along the shows were more colorful.
Many shows today are not brightly lit but dingy.
The westerns where you could tell they were inside a studio because the backdrop was flat. Look at Gunsmoke town as an example.

That is funny. They keep sending me crap. I usually just take the Business reply stuff and drop it in the mailbox. Let it cost them a buck.

My mom is all about ARRP. She is 85, and the minute I got the power over paying her bills, I shut them down—along with her checks to PBS. She has her own stuff to pay for.

I shudder to use them as an example. But every one over 50 knows the feeling of getting that first mailing!

Have a great weekend.

What do you ride? I got a BMW 1200 GSA before last summer and took it cross country. It was the time of my life!

Yes I agree with all of that. But even worse are the families where the well employed Dad gets sick of Mom #1, dumps her for a better, younger model and starts another family.

It can make the kids from the first union avoid taking any relationship commitments. I’ve seen it among the men my girls have dated. There SO many of them out there—decent good kids who feel their Dad abandoned THEM, not their mom.

I have a very good friend who is a big-time marriage counselor. He tells me the ONLY time he counsels for divorce is Addition and abuse. Pretty much everything else can be made better if you are willing to work at it.

I know “one size does not fit all.”

Supposedly Matt Dillon of Gunsmoke was shot 26 times in the left shoulder alone, total count for all the episodes is around 60 total gun shot wounds, with one arrow wound. Of course Gunsmoke spans b&w to colour. I’m thinking he might have killed upwards of a 1000 bad guys, maybe more.

When in peril, women run and twist their ankle. They clearly need elbow steering.

The men are wise; the women can’t form a clear thought, except for the brassy brothel owners out west.

Criminals are foiled by taking too much time explaining their brilliant plot.

Victims announce to the criminal they’re about to call the police.

Children learn moral lessons from their elders.

People listen to each other and never cut in.

“They think of all of the wonderful things we had back then, and brush the bad stuff right under the rug.”

As though today everything is just peachy. What a childish idiot.

Second that!

“I get tired of the old folks on this site pining for the good ole days.”

You mean the days when we were not messing around in the middle east and now have to worry about terrorism and getting strip searched to get on an airplane? Or maybe running war after war because polidiots are out of control?

Maybe when movies had imagination and I didn’t have to worry when watching one if child porn will be shown?

1) On shows, the streets were always wet at night.

2) The Star Spangled Banner at the beginning and end of the programing day. It’s strange to think that TV stations shut down after midnight and there was literally nothing to watch.

3) The lingering bright-white dot after shutting off the Zenith.
