freerepublic | 6/19/2015 | greeneyes

Posted on 06/19/2015 12:32:09 PM PDT by greeneyes

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks.

No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table(recipes)preserving, good living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.

Twinkie :" We *were* getting a few blueberries & raspberries; but the birds swooped in and made hogs of themselves, so no more blueberries."

Have you considered netting or chicken wire to protect the plants from avian invasion, or , is it not worth it ?

Twinkie :" Snails ate on the strawberries; but we washed ‘em ".
Consider the beer in a tin can/ pie plate placed at soil level; snails drink , ..get drunk ,.. and drown.
Slugs are attracked to the fermentation of yeast in beer, and drown (happily, with a smile on their face, providing it is deep enough).
Earlier reference on this post string ..

Original Lurker:" Fordhooks are starting to bloom.
Roma green beans have small fruit and popping with blooms.
Alabama Black Eye Butter beans have reached the top of their (12 feet) poles and are blooming.
I’m pulling both crimson and Alabama Red okra.. (gunna fry up a batch tonight with my BBQ chicken and rice..)
Shishito peppers are rocking. Pulling them almost everyday.
My secondary planting of hybrid tomatoes are going to town, too.
Perilla is going to have to be thinned because it’s taking over everything..
I put some Korean white cukes (three) in the ground earlier this week and they got the memo..
Putting more okra in the ground in the AM..
It’s going to be a good year here in Atlanta..!!"

Do you have any photos ?
You have mentioned several varieties that I am totally unfamiliar with !
P.S. : What is Perilla ? / Uses ?

Thanks for the cloche tip! I had heard of them, but it’s nice to be reminded and hear a good description of how to use them.

Proud_texan:" He said the lead wouldn't hurt a 2-cycle and it had a shelf live far longer than ethanol based stuff even if you use an additive.
He said most small airports would gladly sell to the non-flying public.
Anyone with first hand experience with either? "

I don't have first hand expierience , but know that aviation fuel has no alchol in it , so it doesn't attract water , nor is it corrosive on rubber gaskets ( notorious probem with alcholol as an additive).
Gasoline that has any alcohol will attract water into the tank, generally through condensation, or ,frost in colder climates .
Aviation fuel is known as "pure gasoline" on the 'prepper boards'
and comes highly reccomended for 2-cycle gas engines .
Pure gas can be found according to your state at :
http://pure-gas.org/
When you add "Pri-G" (found at hardware / Central Tractor Supply/ etc.)you extend the shelf life of the gasoline , similar to "Sta-bil".

More good tips, TIK! Thanks!

We are actually having some blackberries this year, and so far the birdies are allowing us a handful here and there!

LOL! I was talking about the page where we write our replies. There is a “To” box, into which is entered the names of FReepers you want to receive the comment. I call that the “ping box.” Not a very precise description, I guess!

I forgot to put the class note ping list into that box when I posted the notes.

BTW, you are welcome!

Please put me on your 'Johnny' list.
I am concerned ,..and pray for him daily
I value his input and opinion, and realize the extent of his fight ,
and appreciate him all the more for his silence in his time of need .
He is a dammed proud warrior who asks for nothing in return, but I value him .
Thanks !

Ladysforest - please see post #39
Since NY folk are having a roller coaster of temps , this might help with getting a jump with the 'hot peppers'.

I noticed that. We have had a little more than 6” in June most in the last week or so. Lots of flooding all around.

Thanks for the info on Johnny. Will keep on praying for him.

I often do that too - send Hubby - not just to the garden either. Grocery store, bank, Dollar store whatever.

Vinegar can be used to kill weeds, that’s true. Sorry I don’t know anything about the gas powered gadgets or aviation fuel.

What?? It’s stopped raining? Not here that’s for sure. We get a breather now and then with just a few drips and then the water works start again.
