Taylor Swift boycotts Apple over tech giant's new streaming service decision not to pay artists

The superstar said Sunday that she will not allow her album '1989' on Apple's new streaming service

She explained on Tumblr that this was because the tech giant will not pay for songs streamed during free trial period

These are the echoed sentiments of every artist, writer and producer in my social circles who are afraid to speak up publicly because we admire and respect Apple so much.'

Swift's '1989' was by far the top-selling US album last year and remains high on charts - insisted that she was speaking for all artists and not just herself.

Swift found the move 'disappointing and completely unlike the historically generous company' Last year, she withdrew her music from Spotify which offers a free tier that is supported by advertisements

Pop superstar Taylor Swift said on Sunday she will not allow her latest album on Apple's new streaming service.

The move by Swift, one of the most outspoken critics of streaming leader Spotify, delivers an early blow to Apple's bid to dominate the booming sector.

Swift said that the tech giant, which is launching the new Apple Music on June 30, will not pay for songs streamed during a free three-month trial period for new subscribers.

'This is about the new artist or band that has just released their first single and will not be paid for its success. This is about the young songwriter who just got his or her first cut and thought that the royalties from that would get them out of debt.

'This is about the producer who works tirelessly to innovate and create, just like the innovators and creators at Apple are pioneering in their field…but will not get paid for a quarter of a year’s worth of plays on his or her songs.

Wow. I didn’t realize she was anti-gay.

“I have Samsung...”

I’m a tech challenged old broad too. I’m not crazy about my Samsung phone but I’d never fork over the money for an i-phone.

I think my next phone is going to be made by LG, I’ve loved any product of theirs I’ve ever had and always find them easy to use.

if Swift doesn’t want to be on two of the most popular music streaming services that’s her decision.

She's still on Pandora's free streaming service. I know because I listen to her there. Obviously, Pandora is doing something the other stations aren't to keep playing Swift's music.

A friend had an LG and loved it. He has an HTC now. I had an HTC as my first phone. A good brand also.

http://recode.net/2015/06/15/heres-what-happens-to-your-10-after-you-pay-for-a-month-of-apple-music/

Spotify spokesman Jonathan Prince points out that Apple offers its own free music via its iTunes Radio service, and will offer more via the Beats 1 radio service that it will launch alongside its paid service; Apple will pay music owners a much lower fee for music streamed on those options, which don’t allow them to call up songs on demand. Says Prince: “We pay royalties on every single listen, including trial offers and our mobile free custom radio service, and that adds up to approximately 70 percent of our total revenues, as it always has.”

Apple’s pitch to the music industry, essentially, is that its seven-tenths of a dollar will be worth much more than Spotify’s seven-tenths of a dollar in the long run, because its free service isn’t meant to compete with its paid service, and because it will sign up many more subscribers than Spotify, which says it has 20 million paying users.

That’s a theoretical argument for now. We can start judging for ourselves on June 30.

I actually agree with Apple on thus. Anything that takes money away from big media or big Hollywood is great in my book!

Fix radio programming and you won’t have to pay ANYTHING for disposable pop faddle.

$15 for an album at least had resale value on CD or LP. There are no used mp3 sales.

Ebay facilitates listeners dumping last month’s fad for much better exchange rate than the used stores ever paid.

Also Miss Swift is wanting to be a artist with album sales (which come with awards and prestige). Selling or streaming singles doesn’t convince listeners to go any deeper than the hit(s).

Apple is picking up all the expenses.

LOL, uh, no, the point of this article is that it's not - it's actually passing the cost of the three free months on to the artists directly.

Fans at woodstock (who couldn’t be bothered to buy tickets and resented that someone had a hamburger stand) were probably pissed that the Grateful Dead and Who almost didn’t play because they demanded to be paid before they went on.

FM radio may “seem” to be in the death throws but really rap and spanish stations are picking up the “empties” as white listeners shrug their shoulders and pay for radio just as they pay to watch television.

She used to be a liberal, it’s true. But then Apple took her sales and made them free...

So Taylor Swift is not going to allow her music to be played? So what is the problem?

I think whats interesting about the whole thing is that as always, history repeats.

Once upon a time Microsoft was going to rule the world and Windows was going to eat all the competition. It tried and failed. Today MS is a shell of what it was in the roaring 90s.

Now it’s Apple’s turn to try ruling the world. And just like MS did, Apple is overreaching. I give Jobs credit. He understood his market. Without him, Apple isn’t so fortunate.

Apple has lots of cultists to be sure. But most of them will go to where the music is. And if enough artists with a name simply go elsewhere, Apple will suddenly see a huge loss in profit. That does not even take into account that the rec0rd co’s are borderline on profitability now. They can’t figure out the internet to this day and many in the industry top to bottom are in downsize mode for survival. Top to bottom. RCs, Engineers/studios, artist...all of it.

So when Apple comes along and socialized their evaporated profits, you can expect significant blowback.

Yes, she is and I make sure to thumb down every time they play one of her songs. I really do not know what it is, but I cannot stand TS. I enjoyed her music initially, but over the last few years, I literally have to change the station or shut it off when her songs play. Oh well, there are plenty that love her.

I was shocked that I had to install stinkin iTunes on me computer to load some tunes on the Crapple mp3 player.

And didn't itunes download a steaming pile of music nobody wanted, without their permission? Talk about high-handed...

What other top performer takes such risks which, as she says, hurts the little guys far more than herself????

I love her. I’d go see her when she comes to town if I had a spare $1000 lying around.

The Galaxy Tab S is awesome, especially with the metal keyboard cover.

Read more carefully. This doesn’t hurt her; it hurts the new guys, the start up bands, the performers still in debt. She is helping others more than herself, and this is rare and refreshing. She is living according to principles of decency. Look how she treats her fans. I think very highly of her.
