Haven’t seen the official explanation posted yet, just preliminary stories.

This is the first story I have seen that actually explains what happened. He put the mortar upside down in the tube.

Someone was left holding the beer, no doubt.

Hummmm
Yep, that explains a lot!
Next year, we'll have better warning labels for what it's worth.

His brother, Cody Staples, told the New York Daily News that "Devon was not the kind of person who would do something stupid. He was the kind of person who would pretend to do something stupid to make people laugh." I beg to differ.

Actually, it sounds like he put the mortar tube upside-down on his head, with the opening facing down. The fireworks shell launched down into his head, rather than shooting upward.

That’s what I thought possibly happened. Thought it would be disrespectful to post though.
To: Gamecock
Why in the world would one put a mortar on one’s head, regardless of which way it was pointed?
To: Gamecock
"He placed the firework in the (mortar) tube upside down," McCausland said. "And rather than being projected upwards, it projected into his skull." Did he have time to hand someone his beer?

I remember setting up a live one in basic. The DS fired one off so we could see exactly what they did. Impressive.

Havent seen the official explanation posted yet, just preliminary stories. I'm sure the official explanation will be some variation of this line from the article: "Staples and his friends had been drinking..."
To: Gamecock
Must’ve been a heck of a performance.
