Need advice from current/former military

Hey all! I need some advice from former or current military members. My daughter and her high school sweetheart got married a couple of weeks ago. He's currently active duty Marine stationed at Camp Pendleton. He's been there only about a year. Great kid and great Marine. He had to return to base while she stays here while waiting until they can send their marriage license through channels so they can get their housing allowance and get an apartment. A little screw up has added a couple of weeks to the wait.

The problem is that he pulled the trigger early and submitted paperwork that he wouldn't need base housing at the end of July. According to him(this is through my daughter) to re-submit for base housing would take weeks and by the time it went through they would be ready to move off base. With the lousy pay they get he can't afford to pay for an apartment without his housing allowance.

I suggested staying with a fellow Marine that lives off base but that isn't an option. I also suggested that he speak to his sergeant but according to him that also isn't an option. He's a great kid but a little wet behind the ears so maybe there's an option that he doesn't know about. I figured with the amount of Military people on this board I could get some good advice. Thanks

Each Base has a Community Service Center where they can check out Kitchen Pots/Pans and whatever they have. (Each Base is Different). STRONGLY agree that she be issued an ID card and enrolls in DEERS (the military dependent health care system). The Admin office needs to know he is married and needs to add her to his SGLI (life insurance). These steps are VERY important because if the Marines do not know he is married and he receives orders he will not be “Command Sponsored” and the military will not pay for her to move. I was stupid and was married after I received orders—could not bring wife. Waited 3 months in Germany until the “Command Sponsorship” came through-—BUT then had to pay for her travel to Germany. His Gunny or First Shirt knows all this and he should talk with him ASAP. He won’t get in trouble—He needs to take care of his family and the Marines will help. All Servicemen and women are taken care of by their respective service IF the Marine asks. Best of luck and God Speed to your Marine!!!

Don’t know what Marines use but in the AF a First Shirt can often be helpful in worn=king out temporary accommodations - should be someone in his chain of command that can be helpful—if he’s in good standing with them.

My son is a rising sophomore and has a research job on campus. It’s only about 10-12 hours a week but it is non-taxed. It’s a good resume enhancer.
