They’re buying the coop- it costs much more to build a coop than to buy adult layers. Obviously no one would rent a chick as they aren’t old enough to lay eggs.

Feed : $7.29 for 50 lba of cracked corn. 11 bucks for 50 lbs of layer crumbles. Organic feed is 23 bucks for a 50 lb bag.

I pay 18 dollars per month to feed 12 free range adult laying chickens, a rooster, 6 ducks, and usually a dozen or two young chicks to replace casualties from predation. They give me 6 dozen chicken eggs with deep orange-red yolks per month, and 2-3 dozen duck eggs [the ducks get us through the period when the chickens molt and quit laying], and I sell 7 dozen eggs per month at 3 bucks per dozen... 21 bucks, leaving me with 3 dollars in the chicken jar plus enough eggs for my own use, plus a continuous supply of chicks, plus they eat ALL the kitchen & garden refuse and every bug they can find. They also supply feathers for crafters and fertilizer for the veggie gardens, and they plow my gardens twice a year for free so I don’t have to own, maintain or refuel a rototiller, and the ducks keep the waterweeds eaten back so we don’t need to resort to chemicals.
They all provide entertainment for a forgetful old family member and myself.
They won’t bring wealth but they have proven they can supply us with eggs in hurricanes when the power is out and refrigeration’s not an option, and all told they are not an expense but an asset.

Yeah.

If each one laid an egg a day for six months it comes out to about $13 a dozen.

That’s not chicken scratch and leaves out the chicken feed.

I know they are expensive compared to what they were, but at 25 cents an egg (about $3/dozen for Grade A Large at local WalMart), they’re still a good deal.

That’s what I thought. What a scam

I’ve got a friend who has ducks for the eggs. Large and delicious

Another friend has chickens. They take up a decent amount of backyard

A friend used to give us free turkey eggs that didn’t pass candling. Many were double yolk and have a stronger taste than chicken eggs. She also gave us free milk straight from the cow - OOOOOMMMMMGGGGG! Nothing is better than real milk!

Why didn’t you let them range feed?

How are brown eggs any different? Less cholesterol maybe?
