DANVILLE, Pa A couple who took their nearly 5-foot boa constrictor for a swim in a Pennsylvania river say the pet slipped away and they're concerned about its welfare.
The Bloomsburg Press Enterprise reported Thursday that Kolby and Zachary Latranyi had been swimming with the snake named Leyla last weekend in the Susquehanna River. The Latranyis say the red-tailed boa was shedding, so the swim was designed to help it remove material from its scales.

Well, there you have it. Their sex toy had been too aggressive lately, so they set it free.

I wonder if boas can survive Pennsylvania winters. Probably not, but maybe. The everglades here in Florida are home of to what promises to eventually be the largest population of Burmese pythons in the world. They will reach a poppulation peak when every other animal in the glades has gone through Burmese digestive tracts. Then they will decline somewhat or move aggressively into the uplands (an entirely relative designation- it refers to the Flatte Mountains of Central Florida) and cities.

“Two idiots who shouldnt be trusted with a pet rock go for swim with five foot snek.”
I understand how I and others like my lost my Siberian Husky. Those things are born to run. A boa however? It took skill to lose a boa.

Releasing it is cheaper than a bitter custody battle.

It'll be absolutely fine. Can't say the same for the rats, cats, and missing poodles... I'm an ignoramus but I just can't get too worked up about the big snake "problem". Evidently there's already enough of them running loose in the south that we'll never get rid of them. The idea that man is supposed to perform wild animal husbandry in order to maintain a pristine pre-Columbian ecosystem is kinda ridiculous. On that same subject however, I am reminded
of a scheme to bring back the buffalo to the Great Plains that has some merit...my judgement swayed by the thought of hearty buffaloburgers, I assume ;) I just ask that the native tribes with a traditional relationship to the buffalo manage the industry as poetic justice and a balm to the national conscience.
For as long as the grass grows, the wind blows, the river flows, and the rocks stand.

If I had a pit bull and it got lost and hurt someone I’d be charged. These people better hope this snake doesn’t hurt someone.

Long ago I thought about the possibility of keeping a boa. Then I read about all the effort and sanitation it required and, realizing how I don’t even like to care for a cat box, entirely rejected the idea of becoming a boa daddy.

Thanks for your post. I was beginning to think everyone on FR was a snake lover! I'm with you. I had an encounter with a 6 foot rattler when I was about 13 at Scout Camp that sealed my dislike for and fear of snakes forever. Irrational? Probably.
And yet, I return to threads like this. What does that say? I have no idea.

It’s not really that much maintenance and is totally worth the effort.
After all, they only go to the bathroom once a month or so.
My dogs are bugging me to go out a dozen times a day.
