The United States presidential election of 1980 was the 49th quadrennial presidential election. It was held on Tuesday, November 4, 1980. The contest was between incumbent Democratic President Jimmy Carter and his Republican opponent, former California Governor Ronald Reagan, as well as Republican Congressman John B. Anderson, who ran as an independent. Reagan, aided by the Iran hostage crisis and a worsening economy at home marked by high unemployment and inflation, won the election in a landslide, receiving the highest number of electoral votes ever won by a non-incumbent presidential candidate.

I think Donald Trump will win. Ted Cruz will be the VP.If anything, that would probably be better the other way around.

Ted Cruz needs to host a few tv shows to win the presidency... : )

I remember the media reporting that AFTERNOON that Reagan had won. (They don’t call it early any more, and I’m glad.) But I was so happy that afternoon. I’ll never forget it. I was in the canteen at NCSU, and the TV was on. I treasure that moment.

I don’t remember Election Night 1980. I’m thinking the coverage was probably past my bedtime, as I was just a few days away from turning 6 years old. But I very well remember watching the Inauguration coverage with my mother, one of my earliest memories.

I prefer Cruz but I'll take Jeb over Hillary or Sanders or any other Dem. See my tagline.

Look at all the crappy 1980 Chrysler cars that all got better than 38mpg highway at 9:35 mark in the YouTube video.

President Anwar Sadat of Egypt announced to the world that his good friend Jimmy had hemorrhoids and made a public appeal for all Egyptians... to pray on this holy day that I would be cured. ...I prayed for him. I said "Please god, heal this a--hole."

On that Election Day evening in 1980 my fiancee & I watched as the results rolled in. John Chancellor & the other newsies were stunned & almost in tears. Their chagrin was palpable.
“How could this have happened?” they bleated. “Why didn’t the voters elect that nice John Anderson if they were dissatisfied with Carter!?”

Look at all the crappy 1980 Chrysler carsYeah, I was thinking of commenting on that myself. What an embarrassing time in our history. But not nearly as bad as now. Hopefully, we can hit a few home runs next year and turn things around in a big way.

I have watched that before....the pain in the network faces is palpable.

Thanks. That's the map I should have included in my post 15.
Did you notice that, on the NBC broadcast, Republicans were blue, and democrats red? That is the way I always thought it should be. Red for the lefty dems. Too bad they later switched.

They had to change that. The Democrats were too easily confused.

Re: Actually, back then they used red for incumbents and blue for challengers, regardless of party.

Thanks for that. I didn't notice that Fledermaus had posted that clarification in post 6.
