How "Hamilton" Recasts Thomas Jefferson as a Villain
The Atlantic ^ | 8-19-2015 | ALANA SEMUELS

The smash Broadway musical by Lin-Manuel Miranda joins the growing movement encouraging Americans to take a closer look at the Founding Father’s life and legacy.

Go to any American elementary school and ask the students to name the Founding Fathers, and it’s likely that Thomas Jefferson will come up, right alongside George Washington and Benjamin Franklin. Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence. Jefferson is on the nickel. Jefferson’s face is one of the four on Mount Rushmore. Jefferson has his own monument in Washington, D.C. Jefferson got to be president.

But Jefferson’s star may be fading. Democrats are erasing his name from political dinners because of his slave-owning history. Abraham Lincoln, almost everyone’s favorite president, “hated Thomas Jefferson,” a Gettysburg College professor explained this summer. After the independent historian Henry Wiencek published a controversial book criticizing the Virginian in 2012, The New York Times called Jefferson “The Monster of Monticello.”

Abraham Lincoln, almost everyone’s favorite president, “hated Thomas Jefferson,”

What’s that have to do with the price of eggs in China? I am able to decide whether or not I like a person even if someone whom I admire doesn’t like him/her. What a ridiculous reason to dislike a person.

Well, if a Puerto Rican rapper says Jefferson is evil, I guess you really have to take notice./

I guess I missed that part where Lincoln said he hated Thomas Jefferson. I can not even think back to when Lincoln said he hated Jefferson Davis. Maybe I missed something.

This show is crap, the book it’s based on also sounds fishy, but I do have questions about who Jefferson was simply based on the fact the Dems have always worshiped at his feet until recently.

We know they are the biggest racists on the planet, and the people vastly responsible for most black Americans misfortunes since arriving in this country.
Why all the adoration for Jefferson by Democrats?

Inquiring minds want to know.

My guess is that it is a kill the messenger strategy at work here.

Jefferson is probably the strongest voice for freedom and liberty in history.

The ideals of freedom and liberty are the Democrats worst nightmares.

The Democrats are trying to destroy the founding fathers reputations so that they can discredit and silence the voices of freedom.

Maybe that was more true 30 years ago when democrats still vaguely cared about America, but now rhar rhey have gone full socialist, Jefferson is now out.

That’s why I said until recently.
The Democrats have spent the last 45 years covering up their racism, and shifting it to Republicans.
That would coincide with your 30 year time frame so what was it about Jefferson they found so appealing?

Honestly, I don’t know, but I would love to ask some truthful 80 year old Democrat historian (I know. I’d have a better chance asking Bigfoot) to gain some insight.

I think they used to like Jefferson because they could distort him into a non-christian ("theist") who would have been the kind of guy to support the ACLU when they represented the Nazi's marching in Skokie.

Now all that matters is he owned slaves, and is responsible for founding the evil imperial america.

He’s probably my least favourite Founding Father. I give him props for the Declaration of Independence and the Louisiana Purchase, but I dislike his embrace of the bloodiness of the French Revolution and taking scissors to the Bible to cut out the miracles.

Also his campaign treatment of John Adams was lousy.

Ask many of them who their own father is and you'll get a blank stare.

Well, in fairness Adams was not perfect either. The Alien and Sedition Act is something Obama would admire and love to copy. No man is perfect, although Washington came awfully close. Jefferson? A genuine polymath genius and mass of contradictions. But if only for the Declaration, Louisiana Purchase, and stopping some of more Tory inclined Federalists from reconstituting a monarchy on this side of the water he is due respect.

If David Benhioff and D.B. Wiess would have been in charge of the John Adams Mini-Series, they would have had Thomas Jefferson Burn his Daughter at The Stake in-order to not get the Audience to like him. Their reasoning being that she was destined to die anyway so we need him to do something bad so we don't like him.

After the Red Coats and their "20 Good Men" had burnt all his Ink Wells so he couldn't write the Deceleration of Independence >:(

As I recall,in 1800, Hamilton ended supporting Jefferson to make him president as opposed to Burr who he thought totally unworthy.
