World's Oldest Cat lives in Oregon

When she was 6 1/2, Ashley Okura picked a kitten from a litter and named him Corduroy.

That was 1989.

It's now 2015, and Corduroy keeps on purring.

“He's very mellow, unless there's a critter that catches his attention," Ashley said. "Then he perks up and he'll go after it.”

Ashley's brother picked a cat from the same litter and named him Batman.

Batman died at age 19.

Corduroy is now 26 - and considered the world's oldest living cat by Guinness World Records.

"All of these types of records, they require a vast amount of documentary evidence to ensure that the age is being recorded accurately," said Kim Patrick with Guinness World Records. "In the case of the cat, it was a birth certificate, it was statement from the veterinarian who has been treating the cat its entire life, along with photos of the cat throughout the years.”

What's the secret to his longevity?

Does Corduroy suffer from Squeaky Pants Syndrome?

A friend of mine had a black manx that lived a good long spell. We aren’t sure to the month, but our best estimate is a little over 23 years.

My cat (Abbie Normal) is creeping up on 17. Hope he stays with me for at least a few years longer. Cuz it wouldn’t be right for him to go and leave me... :-(

My Tabitha passed away this last week, just 6 weeks shy of turning 19.

Two things I learned from her final years: keep your cat’s teeth clean and watch their thyroid function. Problems either way will cause old cats to waste away, but the two together are deadly.

My cat Ruby just turned 19. She gets thyroid medicine twice a day.

Best cat we ever had was one that was waiting for us on the porch of a vacation cottage we rented on Lake Almanor. We unlocked the door and he strolled right in and made himself right at home. No collar, tag, or chip. Checked with all the neighbors, vets, and real estate agents around the area and nobody knew of him, so we brought him home with us. Winter was only a couple months away and he probably wouldn’t have made it as the snow flies heavy and deep up there. Kids named him “PK” (Perfect Kitty) and he was with us about another 12 years. He loved to curl up on my wife’s chest when she found the rare opportunity to lie down and read or watch TV. As he hit about 16, he’d sit under the living room end table table lamps soaking up the heat from the bulb. One day I reached over to pet him as he was enjoy paying the warm lamp and he just fell off the end table, hit the floor, went into convulsions and lost bladder control. I thought I’d killed him with a gentle head scratch! He went downhill really quickly after that and we lost a real friend to the whole family when he passed. Subsequent kitties have been nice, but nothing like PK.
