Where does he stand on the Constitution? Inquiring minds want to know?
You forgot the rest of that statement. Trump said that gay rights is "not my thing one way or the other." He doesn't care either way. Turning that into him being in favor of traditional marriage is...a stretch, to say the least.
All that does is reinforce what most anti-Trumpers are saying: That his conservatism magically began in 2011 when he decided he wanted to run for office. It doesn’t prove anything any more than taking Romney’s most recent flip flops in the last election as proof of conservatism does.
Trump’s followers will point to Reagan here as proof that you can change your stripes, and they’re right. The difference though is that Reagan also proved himself as a governor first. He showed that his change of stances were true. Trump isn’t willing to do that though. He wants people to take him at his word with no proof, and that is what bothers us. If this new conservative Trump spent a single term as a governor or even mayor of NYC and showed his conservatism was legitimate, I’d be willing to support him.
The article headline is right though, most of us anti-Trumpers think this matters to his followers. It doesn’t. Most don’t seem to care if he’s a conservative or not as long as he talks tough and fights the establishment.
