free republic | 9/4/2015 | greeneyes

Posted on 09/04/2015 12:31:29 PM PDT by greeneyes

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks.

No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table(recipes)preserving, good living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.

Bought from Dollar General closeouts last year. American Seed packets.

Recognized them, but had no idea how good they are.

The type 2 is not the one that resembles Romano tomatoes. It is odd shaped pear tomato. Lumpy pear shape.

I plan to save some seed, but mine are planted next to Baxter Cherry tomatoes. Open pollinated. We’ll see if they run true.

The Baxter Cherry tomatoes have been huge producers. All my neighbor got care packages from me.

Remember when I told you the strawberries were done… Well they produced another gallon that Lady Bender turned into jam and also some syrup for ice-cream topping.

Two pickings of Diva cucumber within 3 or 4 days produced about 110 that are as hard to give away as Zucchni

This years tomatoes are a bit of a disappointment as there is a few rotting and they are not a tasty as years past

With 160 acres, you will be working hard! How much is pasture and wooded?

We could only afford 18 so don’t have the privacy we wanted. But it’s still better than being in a subdivision in Mexifornia! And it’s still a ton of work and I don’t have critters yet!

About 50 is woodland, 10 or so in pasture that Beau currently rents out for Heifers (young milk cows who haven’t gotten pregnant yet) and the rest is in production for hay, soybean and field/seed corn.

I have ONE YEAR to get settled in there, get the house up to snuff and running smoothly, put in more vegetable gardens (fun!) and then Beau is retiring from construction work and he’s going to take over the actual production part of the farm versus renting out the land to others.

We shall see! :)

Sounds like fun!

I found the beginning stage to be the best - planning, hoping, dreaming...

When the hard work starts and everything doesn’t run perfectly, it’s a big dose of reality, LOL! But all worth it.

Keep us apprised of how things go. When do you make the move?

I’m leaving full time employment the end of January 2016, after I train my replacement.

Feb/March will be cleaning out the new (to me) house and deciding what stays and what goes. We’re combining two full households, so something has to give.

April will be spent moving me to the new (to me) house, then a final clean-up of my farm and she goes on the market.

Then the FUN starts, LOL!

I’m excited for you!

We moved to our getaway a few months ago. The house needs an entire remodel though. The 5 acres of woods is a mess and needs cleaning up - firewood! Fruit trees need planting, gardens need getting ready, housing for critters, ... but first, gotta can the wonderful apples from 3 existing trees ;)

AdaGray : Post # 14 : " Does anyone have any experience with black knot disease in plums?"

A Friend of mine had a flowering plum in her front yard that concentrate black knot disease.
Suggestions by horticulturists suggested cutting the tree down.
We chose to judiciously cull injured branches with a pruning shear, sanitized with chlorox after each cut.
Every rainstorm allowed the disease to spread to lower branches , and eventually it overcame the entire tree.
It eventually took the entire tree.
Removal of branches and fallen leaves is essential,as is sanitation of pruning shears after each and every cut,..
but I fear that it is a lesson in futility unless the entire tree is removed, as the spores are carried on the wind , and distributed by rain.
My suggestion : cut your losses !
..or else risk the entire orchard .

If you have freezer space, peel and freeze some of those cucumbers in chunks. I’ve found cucumber smoothies can work miracles on a sore throat.

Have you ever raised San Marzano plum tomatoes?

San Marzano has always been a 'meh' producer for me in the past. This year, I gave the San Marzano Nano line a shot, and they are doing very well.

Go figure.
