Yes, they used to barnstorm north from spring training. Savannah was one frequent stop; Birmingham (old Rickwood Field), as I recall, was another.

Teams don’t do that anymore; it was fun. And it allowed fans in cities like Savannah to see the big leaguers up close.

They also abandoned the practice of playing an annual exhibition game against the AAA team.

College ball or Rookie League? Either way, it’s a step down, but the Rookie League is professional (just starting, but professional.)

Personally, I think MLB would be well served by having more farm clubs, but I think they’re afraid that if they just let teams have more, it will provide a long-term competitive advantage for the wealthy clubs.

Among the many things I think MLB is handling precisely the wrong way.

The minor leagues have great team names.

Yes, some abandoned, such as the Prince William Cannons (now the Potomac Nationals.) There are also some off-the-wall names, such as the Richmond Flying Squirrels and the Akron Rubber Ducks, both of the Eastern League. (Giants and Indians farm clubs, respectively.)

In a few years the International League’s Pawtucket Red Sox hope to move to nearby Providence with a new stadium

Where I believe they'll be the Rhode Island Red Sox. Instead of the Pawsox, they'll be the Risox.

Pawtucket has been the Red Sox' AAA team since 1968 or 1969, one of the longest-standing relationships in baseball.

Pensacola is AA, not that far away from the bigs. Help may be on the way.

You know, it wouldn’t surprise me if the Atlantic League starts eyeing that ballpark.

Wang went 8 innings to defeat Vegas on Sunday and eliminate them.

I think you are right.

I went to USC in the mid 80s and seem to remember that. Of course, I didn’t get to see any games, nor, did I get to see the Gamecocks play, I was trying to pass my classes.

I think it’s a semi-pro league.

My Dad playing in the same kind of league back in the early 50s.

He quit because the batting swing was messing with his golf swing.

Then he got kids and he took care of his family. Still played golf, but, I think he wanted to try going pro at one point.

One of my favorite team names is an Atlantic League club: the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs.

There are several collegiate summer leagues throughout the country. The players have summer jobs and play for a team to get additional experience. There are a couple of these leagues near me. They’re kind of fun.

CHISOX HAVE a playoff race concluding on TUES.

Pioneer League concludes.
Great Falls (CHISOX) has the 2-way tiebreaker with Billings (based on overall season record).
Billings (CINN) has the 3-way tiebreaker based on head-to-head among all 3. (including Missoula Osprey - ARIZ)

Thanks..have read Camden NJ is really run down...

uncyclopedia:”Camden is a socialistic welfare community in New Jersey, and the largest “cost-center” east of the Mississippi. Because almost half of the residents live in poverty, Camden’s inhabitants have realized the only way they have any hope of being successful in life is by adopting the ideals of Stalinist Communism. The majority of Camden’s residents are Hispanic or Black. Camden is also one of the most dangerous cities in the United States. If you don’t believe it, then just take a stroll through downtown Camden and count how many needles and stray bullets you find lining the city streets.

Billings won (and another team that needed to lose did as well), Great Falls doesn’t make the playoffs, breaking an 8 year streak of making them. :(
