Bernie Sanders is speaking at Liberty University right now
Posted on 09/14/2015 8:09:55 AM PDT by SoFloFreeper
Don't know what he is saying, but I find it amazing this conservative Christian school is more tolerant of a socialist than most secular schools are of Christians.

Re: Why would they allow that communist/socialist on their campus?
To show students firsthand physical evidence of what true evil liberalism really is. I have no problem with it.
And you think most of these young (many naive and largely ignorant on such matters) college kids will actually get that message listening to an old veteran politician like Sanders speaking articulately on the issues? If they had a knowledgeable adult there to counter him, it would be different.

The students should be smart enough to figure out that his ideas are drivel. You don't speak with many millennial's do you?

Socialism appeals to those who seek their own righteousness, but it’s even worse than “works-based salvation”.
They seek their own righteousness by advocating that government do the good works,
as it doesn’t personally cost them anything, including time.

I know. But what does that have to do with the simple irony of a government control freak type like Sanders speaking at a university named ‘Liberty’?

Aren’t there chances to hear socialist ideas in 99% of the media?

No, you are the one who sounds like a Democrat. A Christian University has nothing in common with a socialistic, communistic platform. These kids are very impressionable - or have you noticed what academia has done to our youth?

I have no problem with this at all. This is how all institutions of higher learning should present conflicting/opposing ideologies. What we really lack in the American education system (and in many, if not most, American families) is the teaching of critical, independent thought based on the consideration of objective evidence.
I hope that the students at Liberty will be respectful in listening to Sanders and present respectful, but hard-hitting questions if permitted. What they’ll find is that the attitude of modern socialists is that, despite repeated failures of socialist ideology, socialists adhere to the belief that the “right person/people” haven’t yet had a chance to make it work.

And just which liberal campuses have allowed Ted Cruz to speak to their students? Other than Liberty University, of course - none - zilch - zero. These kids aren’t being exposed to all ideas - just one sided. To let this socialist on their campus is almost sacrilege.

To let this socialist on their campus is almost sacrilege. To let this socialist on their campus is innoculation. They will see what type of a creature he is. Liberty trusts their students to be able to think for themselves, unlike many other universities. This is what universities should do!
To: ManHunter
Liberty University is a private college - they don’t have to open their students up to hearing leftist ideology. So, why are they doing this? I can’t imagine Hillsboro College allowing this communist to speak there. We are talking 18-22 year olds for the most part. This undermines their Christian teachings.

We might remember, many Liberty University students come from a home school or private Christian school background where their understanding of America's founding principles was informed by exposure to the Founders' own writings and speeches, not by some "progressive" historian's warped interpretation of America's history.
Also, many do not come from a mainline denomination's likewise "progressive" interpretation of scriptures and an adaptation of contemporary "progressive" ideas.

So true, I agree with every word.

To: Opinionated Blowhard
Hey. This is a great example of what should happen at a university. The student population probably is conservative and Capitalist. Sanders is a Socialist. The students get to hear different ideas and test them against their own ideas. It doesnt happen at many universities anymore. People are asking why a conservative college is allowing this and you stated it exactly. That's the difference between the liberal universities and the conservative ones: the conservative universities understand the idea of welcoming people of different ideas and letting them speak, let the students decide for themselves.
