Looking for fellow FReepers opinions about statins. I told doc I do not want a script. However how effective are fish/krill oils? what about cetia?. Of course I understand about diet but I have not started a new diet yet. Go ahead and go to town on this one, please.

I get muscle aches from every statin on the market.

My doctor now has me on niacin.

It’s cheap, effective and available over the counter.

Why does doc want you on Statins? What are ALL your various cholesterol numbers? IMHO statins can kill you faster

If you like fish fine, but don’t waste any time or energy changing your diet. The whole fish oil thing is quickly going the way of so many other health “rules” we were told to live by. I’ll try and find you some cites and post below.

My doc hustled me to take statins for years. I researched statins on line and determined that the negatives outweighed the positives and started taking fish oil instead. I take 3 grams of Omega 3 fish oil a day. The cholesterol tests all come up with a very good final number. Doc keeps pushing statins anyway, “well, your age...” No thanks. I also take some krill oil for the astaxanthin. Research anything your doctor wishes you to take. Research alternative health. Sometimes you find that the alternatives are overrated, often you find that they are the better choice. Alternatives usually (not always) have not the side effects that seem universal with prescription drugs. I am prone to kidney stones and kidney infections and do not even bother with going to the doctor for them anymore.

My mom had statin induced myalgia. She had to get off of them and be on steroids for a bit before it went away. It took quite a long time.

Stay off the statins.

Drink plenty of water.
Take Fish Oil (Omega-3)
Lots of exercise, including resistance training.
Lose weight, if you need to.

If you’re older, stay away from jogging. Do low-impact cardio, running in place on a small trampoline or, if you can afford it, an eliptical or “Adaptive Motion Trainer”.

I second the Mercola. His site has improved since it started including the synopsis right at the top so you don’t have to spend inordinate amounts of time finding out that an article does not have anything in it that you need or letting you know that yes, this is the info you are looking for.

Statins....read the January FDA alert on the effects of Statins....

FDA is advising consumers and health care professionals that:

Routine monitoring of liver enzymes in the blood, once considered standard procedure for statin users, is no longer needed. Such monitoring has not been found to be effective in predicting or preventing the rare occurrences of serious liver injury associated with statin use.

Cognitive (brain-related) impairment, such as memory loss, forgetfulness and confusion, has been reported by some statin users.

People being treated with statins may have an increased risk of raised blood sugar levels and the development of Type 2 diabetes.

Some medications interact with lovastatin (brand names include Mevacor) and can increase the risk of muscle damage.

Niacin has its own problems, though way better than statins which are pretty much useless producing almost all side effects and no actual benefits. Check Mercola.com on Statins.
There is a link in a previous comment.

If you are taking statins you MUST take coenzyme Q 10 along with it . Your doctor may or may not know, but coenzyme Q 10 is blocked by statins and your body needs it.

I’m going to disregard the “elders” response (sheesh....) but will tell you this. My husband went on statins and never felt WORSE. He said it was like you were getting the flu.. every day. The doctor assured him that his body would “regulate” to the medicine.. it didn’t. Yes, he threw them out and took fish oil capsules, and L-Arginine (1000 MG three to four pills per day)... two in the a.m. and two in the p.m. Long story short, his BP and cholesterol are now fantastic and he says he feels good. (The L-Arginine helps the heart and many migraine suffers are seeing the benefits as well). The fish oil is purchased from Purity Products (company is online and I think you can request a catalog) and the L-Arginine is from GNC. The Purity product fish oil contains a berry juice so you aren’t “burping” fishy taste. HAPPY BIRTHDAY, VaRepublican!

Anyone who takes statins MUST take Ubiquinol...doctors who do not tell patients this are irresponsible

My doc told me to be careful with Niacin. Only buy high quality - stay away for the chinese crap.

Fish oil works well, and I hate fish. So, the burps drive me crazy. Again, get a good brand; Schiff Mega-Red is less intrusive. It’s helped my blood numbers.
