A longtime American wardrobe staple is in danger of extinction

Blue jeans are increasingly going out of style, and even industry heavyweights like Levi's and Gap are taking notice.

Teens are now buying more gear from Nike and Lululemon over denim classics from brands like Abercrombie, according to a recent Piper Jaffray survey on teen spending.

Levi's CEO has admitted that the company is threatened by the athleisure trend of wearing yoga pants, Bloomberg reports.

"We’re scrambling," Bloomberg notes CEO Chip Bergh told analysts last year. "I mean, there is a big difference between the product that we’ve got on the floor today and what the consumer is looking for. And we just flat-out missed it."

Bloomberg reports that Levi's, which is the world's most iconic denim company, stuck to its core product instead of adapting to consumer trends.

As a result, this has cost the company. Bloomberg notes sales have dipped from over $7 billion to $4.8 billion over the years.

"As we saw ‘casualization’ continue even further, the customer basically told us that they had enough denim until something really unique and innovative came along,'" NPD analyst Marshal Cohen told Bloomberg. "We really saw the denim industry and denim retailers basically turn their nose up on the customer and say, 'We don’t care what you really want, we’re going to tell you what you want.'"

Costco and Sam’s Club both sell house brand jeans that fit the bill.

Almost all college coeds are wearing yoga pants now.

This requires a separate thread.

What I will never *get* are the designer jeans that are distressed, that seem to be in vogue.

When our jeans became distressed mom put those iron-on patches to hide the holes ...so we could get more wear out of them.

I recall, fondly, a pair of Levis from my teen years....that wore thru the seat [Bicycle riding a lot]...mom would throw them in the trash...I'd find them, sew on a patch, and continue to wear them.

It’s a different ballgame when you have a BMI of 40 or more. Fat people have unique fat roll placement. The fat rolls on obese people are almost like a fingerprint. Finding a pair of (non stretch) jeans that fits your particular distribution of fat rolls is challenging. It’s easier to just buy the ‘athleisure’ stuff that doesn’t fit as closely and fight other battles.

Had only one pair of jeans. Found them very uncomfortable.

Stick to casual pants and shorts in the summer.

A friend loves her Levis.......used to put on a new pair then sit in the bath for 2 hours to mold them to her body.

To each his own...

Reminds me of my 3 boys, two years apart, who always has hand-me-downs. The problem were how the knees became worn ...un - hand-me-downable fer sure. Then they became cut-off shorts.

I haven’t worn jeans in over 30 years. It feels like wearing cardboard.

I’m wearing sweatpants right now.

That wasn't what I had in mind but that's a winner!
Co-ordinated denim, shoes, shirt AND necktie makes one very smart young man!

I still wear Levis, but they’re probably older than you are—LOL!

I believe I have a pair that is at least 35 years old...

Just for the weekends...so they last...

jeans/Levi’s wear for years. Hence six pair except for a few dressier ones will last a person for years. Very serviceable and really go most anywhere outside of formal dress required.

Put on a good looking jacket and nice shoes and feel good anywhere. I love Levi’s! they come in regular blue jeans and in black jeans in recent years. Same durable fabric!!!

Extinct for now perhaps, but they will be back in vogue in 20 years or so. I’ll make sure to save the pairs I have and will them to the children. They can sell them. Perhaps they might even be able to start a business when they come back into style.
