Dentist who killed Cecil the lion won’t be charged because hunt was legal

The American dentist who sparked worldwide outrage in July when he killed Cecil — Zimbabwe’s most beloved lion — will not be charged with any crime because the hunt was perfectly legal, authorities said Monday.

Walter Palmer, 55, had “all (his) papers in order” when he tracked the rare black-maned big cat and took him down with a bow and arrow just outside Hwange National Park in the Western part of the African country, according to Reuters.

Environment Minister Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri told local media that Zimbabwean authorities had conducted an investigation in part with the Prosecutor General, which concluded that the Minnesota dentist was indeed hunting legally like he had long claimed — and he had no idea that the lion he had killed was one of the country’s biggest tourist attractions.

The story contradicts itself here. The hunt was illegal but any wrongdoing was done by the guides, who are still facing charges.

I still think trophy hunting is lame but I'm not going to put myself in the business of telling this guy what he should like, what he should do with his spare time, or how a country should manage their wildlife. If that country determined that his part in this was legal, I'm satisfied with that.

Zimbabwe doesn’t want to scare off hunters who bring them cash.

Yikes...too close for my comfort.

Meanwhile, the men who allegedly used bait to lure Cecil out of his protected habitat in Hwange National Park are still facing charges in connection with his death, Reuters reports.,

I guess only the doctor made the proper payments to the proper investigator during the investigation.

They do not have to arrest him. They’ve already ruined the guy’s life.

I am no hunter, but jeeze, how the hell was he supposed to know the lion had a name. Did it have a collar and a tag?

Man eating lions are killed many times a year in Africa. Man is NOT the top of the food chain there.

Stupid Americans.

honestly, I think you are spot on.

I actually think it was some Oxford researchers who had it tagged. No kidding. I think that’s how “Cecil” got his name!

Cecil — Zimbabwe’s most beloved lion

Huh? I'm going out on a limb, here, and suggest that the overwhelming majority of folks in the disaster area known as Zimbabwe have more important things on their minds than "Cecil" ...
