Note, the British offer is described first. U.S. offer comes partway down the article.
Microsoft has, for a limited period only, offered to pay up to £100 to convince UK consumers to part with their old computers in exchange for a Windows 10 device.
If a customer is willing to shell out at least £499 on a PC running Redmond's latest operating system, then the company said it would stump up £100 to encourage holdouts to upgrade.
The cashback offer falls to £50 for Windows 10 devices in the £349 to £498.99 price range, and drops to £30 for new PCs carrying a price tag of between £249 to £348.99, Microsoft said.
Customers wanting to take advantage of the frankly desperate deal will have 14 days to claim the cash following their purchase.
The payment won't be immediate, though.
Microsoft said it would take up to 28 days to validate the claim and customers are required to do the legwork by packing up their old laptops, desktops (including MacBooks and iMacs) and Chromebooks and sending them on to the software giant.
It's worth noting that the offer is slightly different for US consumers.
Windows 10 device purchasers who cough up more than $599 can trade in a laptop and receive $200 from Microsoft. But, amusingly, fanbois who pay the same price for a Windows 10 device can swap out their MacBook for $300.
Yup, it's official, Microsoft sees more value in Apple gear.
Anyone interested in the deal has until 20 October to claim back the cash in the US. While here the UK, Redmond said the offer stands until 27 October.
You’ll get a kick out of this — Microsoft thinks Mac gear is worth more. Who knew?
BTW, the article at The Register’s site has the embedded links for a lot of the info. For more in-depth info, go to the Register’s page.
Let me guess, it’s funded by a Nigerian prince.

Lots of Mac owners are going to ditch their crummy ol’ obsolete machines to get on the Windows Ten bandwagon. Get paid to upgrade!
Why do they want us so much for us to take this new operating system?
Marketing strategy. It is worth more to get your opponent’s gear off the market than computers running your software.
Planned obsolescence is Apple’s downfall. The fanbots, fembots and manobots go buy an iphone and 12 months later it is obsolete, so they have to buy an iPhone 6 or 6s. The fanbots are spinning like hamsters in a cage on a treadmill. Meanwhile the ghouls in Cupertino collect the tolls on all this foolishness. That’s all they are. Toll collectors.
My take is that there is more value in moving you into their Windows operating “environment” for future sales and service, not the hardware value. They pay less for MS products because you are already in the family.
Sounds like the old inkjet printer “consumables” model. Hook you with a cheap printer, nail you with toner.
Remember -- Windows 10 is "Windows As A Service". Don't you ever fail to apply all the Windows Updates.
Microsoft's Tyer Myerson said that "once a Windows device is upgraded to Windows 10, we will continue to keep it current for the supported lifetime of the device at no charge."You didn't apply all of your Windows Updates? You lose -- your Windows starts costing you money at that point. What does that mean, really? Users must keep their devices supported. "Supported" means apply ALL the updates. ALL of them.
"Updates are cumulative, with each update built upon all of the updates that preceded it. A device needs to install the latest update to remain supported," Microsoft states in fine print.

I looked for a link to a site where you could buy a sense of humor but, alas, no luck.
Just curious... how come the "[United Kingdom]" prefix on the title? The article's topic and Microsoft's offer applies to U.S. customers as well as Brits. I've posted scores of threads from The Register in the past, so I assume it's not just that the website is from the U.K.
Did I do something wrong?
Thanks.
Yeah, I LOL'ed too. I just figured I'd use the comment as an excuse to post the link to the actual offer page.
Now, come on, a bright fellow like you has read the threads and stories about all the data that Windows 10 "harvests". They wouldn't be doing it if they didn't mean to make money from it. Right?
I assume you just left off the /sarc (or maybe the /wink) tag on your comment. :-)
No thanky.
