Where did the battery come from? I got the current from the local AutoZone. It is just a silver class battery (whatever that really means).
Just had the same exact problem with our Dodge truck. It was the ignition control module. $450.00 later I’m back on the road.
One Freeper just said he deactivated it by covering it up because he had a manual gauge anyways.
Yeah, tried that as well..No click whatsoever from the starter.
I have a 2012 Ram. Had the exact same problem once. There is a anti-theft plug/device of some sort to the right of my parking break lever. I knocked it loose once while getting out without realizing it. I don’t know if yours has the same device or not, but it is worth a check.
My round trip to work is 75 miles daily, five days a week. Sometimes more if I have to run over to my backup datacenter. Thanks for the info on the sensors.
My next step is to call the dealership and make sure this Cherokee has not missed any recalls.
This is the third time. The first time I didn’t think I had it in “park” so I dropped it to low then back into park. Another time I gave it a couple turns before it would start and thought the FOB might be flaky. This time, kaput until I got it to the garage. I don’t mind so much getting it fixed its maddening that we can’t pull a diag code from the onboard computer to even begin a diagnosis.
Thanks for the post..Been there, done that.
The mechanic has been testing all parts and manners of the circuits and sensors looking for shorts or low voltage.
BTW, he does not charge me for diagnostics, only the time/labor for the actual fix and parts. We go back 15 years plus.
This is reminding me of the time I asked my (very astute) mechanic “What’s wrong with (brand *******) spark plugs?”
His reply, “The name on the box.”
I had a problem with my Jeep Comanche (Pick-Up Truck) that sounds similar.
I had no problems (over 120,000 miles). One day drove to town, about 40 miles when the engine quit with no warning. I checked all connections with no positive results. Called my wife and waited for her. About 40 mins. went by, I tried to start. . .it started with no problem. got her to follow me to Jeep dealer, it quit after about 5 miles. Let it set for a while, started right up.
Problem turned out to be the “Top Dead Center sensor” had a crack in the collar. The TDC sensor is located on the end of the crankshaft and sends a signal to the central processor which controls all ignition and fuel systems.
When the engine was cool, the collar would shrink enough to send the proper signal. As the engine heated up the collar would expand enough to cause the crack to open enough to send a “bad” signal to the central processor. The engine would quit.
Cost me about $400-500 for the fix.
Hope this helps.
Some thoughts were that the starter motor may have stopped on some position where the starter motor was not having good internal connections (do they still have brushes?).
If it is not a bad cable connection (including motor grounding to block if designed that way), ignition switch, or solenoid, it's likely the starter motor becoming intermittent.
The local dealership has seen this problem before and could not figure it out so they replaced the starter and when the owner went the next state over on a trip, same problem happened again to them. So, the dealership will just replace “something” and I will most likely be stuck with the same problem at some point.
Yep. Wouldn’t give you ten dollars for our Dodge Ram. It has spent more time in the shop then a full time Dodge mechanic. Wife bought it and I haven’t let her forget it.
Thanks for the info...
I have a 2014 Grand Cherokee with a “Start” button, versus starting with a key. As long as you have the key on you, it should start. About 6 months after I purchased my Jeep, I got into the car, pushed the Start button, nothing happened. I tried several more times, absolutely nothing happened. A message came up on the display saying “Key fob not detected”, which should only appear if you don’t have the key with you when you try to start the car (I had both sets of keys on me.) I tried holding the key next to the start button, still nothing. After about 20 minutes of trying, it finally started up (there is no place to put in a key to override the start button.) I took it to the dealer, who couldn’t do anything other than say they could not recreate the problem, so they reset the software. Fortunately, the problem has not happened again.
That will probably be my failsafe if we can’t find the problem in the next few days. That and putting it in neutral and moving it a few feet to see if it is a sensor or something with the drive train. I don’t think it is thermal as it is very sporadic and has happened in Winter and in Summer.
Did the dash lights, power windows, radio, etc continue to function? I am seeing what you describe on several other websites.
If you do go through with the 02 sensors, I bought mine from Amazon (seriously), they were dirt cheap along with Ebay but they are OEM.
AND, both our vehicles are made by Chrysler. hmm....
