Although the Texans terminated former backup quarterback Ryan Mallett’s two-year, $7.005 million contract Tuesday, he’s eligible for $1.47 million in termination pay for the remainder of his Paragraph 5 base salary under the NFL collective bargaining agreement.
That still counts against the Texans’ salary cap.
It’s a one-time mechanism where Mallett can file for the remaining 10 $147,058 game checks, which includes being paid for the Texans’ bye week. Mallett was already paid $1.029 million for the first seven weeks of the season in game checks, in addition to $437,500 for seven per-game active roster bonuses.
Mallett forfeits the remaining $562,500 available in per-game roster bonuses, which could have netted him up to $1 million if he had been active and on the roster for every game.

I don’t understand how this guy can claim the contractual fee when he didn’t fulfill his contract by not showing up for practices, missing the plane to Miami, etc. I would think things like that would immediately initiate a breach of contract.

Showing up late is not a breach of contract. It does point to an attitude problem if it is chronic, though. The team thought that it was best to fire him, but they have to pay him off.

Because the CBA spells out certain times and methods of termination that mean you still have to be paid for the year (and count against the cap). Similar thing happened when the Pats dumped Hernandez, it happened in one of the “they still count” windows.
Yet it took them this long to see what many others also saw?

They chose the red head. I think the Bengals made the correct choice.

Well, I’m a Pats fan, so I got to see his pre-season performance. I always thought Hoyer was better. Ryan could really zip the ball... but he was as immobile as Bledsoe. And, like I said, no touch. I can see why the Pats decided he was neither a suitable backup to Brady, nor a long-term replacement for Brady.
My opinion is about the Texans coach. I don’t remember his name, but I watched HBO’s Hard Knocks. He was praised as a “players” coach. Because he could get down on the player’s level ( by saying the “F” word every 3 seconds gives you street cred).
I told my wife he wasn’t going to be successful. Saying the F word doesn’t give you respect, it takes it away. You can emphasize what you think is important without using profanities. And people will respect you because of it.
I consider the coach as a joke.
