Windows 10 passes 120 million installs

Capturing (or retaining) a sizable amount of your established user base is a top priority for any iterative software launch. Given that Windows is the most widely used OS in the world, Microsoft had something of a captive audience ahead of the launch of Windows 10, but that shouldn't detract from the company's accomplishment in garnering installs.

Three months after it launched on July 29, Windows 10 has been installed more than 120 million times, according to a report from WinBeta. Microsoft's goal is one billion installs over the course of three years -- an optimistic aim, but one that the company is on pace for at the current rate of adoption.

Of course, it's worth noting that Windows 10 likely wouldn't have seen this massive influx of users if it wasn't being offered for free. Given that Microsoft has hinted that the OS will eventually be offered at a price, it's likely that these numbers will slow significantly once the initial rush is over.

However, Microsoft has an ace in the hole to ensure that Windows 10 adoption doesn't slow to a halt. Windows 10 is an effort to bring a wide range of devices together via a coherent user experience, and that means that there are plenty of different types of devices whose users will choose to install Windows 10, adding to these already impressive figures.

Why, exactly, is this news?

I, for one, consider Microsoft to be the Yugo of OSs and will NEVAH be shamed by having their Obamacare in my house.

You won Microsoft and the NSA going up your hindquarters even more swiftly and efficiently than ever before, and you’ll never know they were there! ;)

The Yugo went bust. I’m still waiting for this to happen to the Windows OS.

I use my computer to transcribe, surf the Internet, download audio and email. That’s about it. Do I need Windows 10? I so don’t like it when layouts and familiar things change just because it’s a new version.

Does that include every MSFT employee that is told to reinstall windows 10 every night when they get home?

If it says it’s free, it isn’t.

Installed 120 million times.... by just 2 dozen people trying to get it to work right?

Why on earth would you hope for that?

People are perfectly free to use anything else they want. So if they want to pay money for a new computer in order to use OSX or go fiddle around with 100 different Linux ISO distros, they certainly can.

Maybe people just don’t want to?

Jesus, many of us use Windows for our daily work, businesses, and other tasks just fine despite the absurd exaggerated trails we supposed go though on an hourly basis according to people that dont use it....or know how

It’s good to have a spare computer around that can run your favorite software so you don’t get pushed into a huge upgrade on short notice.

Finally got Win10 installed on an extra Win7 hard drive.

Not impressed. They removed the ‘classic’ theme and the standard one looks like crap. Toolbars fade into the windows, slidebars are nearly invisible and too narrow, window box lines are too narrow.

Switched out to my other hard drive with Win 7. It was refreshing to see a screen and windows that are usable.

Windows 10 was, like 8, made for glitz and glitter, not productivity. They can take their tiles and ...

It took me 2 tries to get it installed on an extra hard drive with Win7. The instructions were unclear on some things.

“If it says it’s free, it isn’t.”

Only the upgrade version of Windows 10 is free. The service tech who helps me maintain my system says that if you want a clean full install of Windows 10 you will have to buy the disk from Microsoft. I’m happy with Windows 7 and intend to get all the mileage out of it that I can.

Installed it on one computer and lost my security software. I then had to buy new software that would work with Win 10. I won’t upgrade the other computers for as long as possible.

Nothing personal (and I know, you didn't ping me to do so), but I'm gonna resist waking up the Windows Ping List every time MS racks up another 1% of its intended 1Bn installs. I caught hell for doing it at 110 million, and learned my lesson. :-)

Maybe at 250 million -- quarter way to the goal. Definitely at halfway. Until then, it just feels like trolling for anti-Windows sarcasm.

Roger that. When 7 fails, i go to XP until it fails and then I go to Warp 4 OS/2. Never fails.

If I need more, I write it in C or Assembler.
