Microsoft has released Build 10586 of Windows 10 to "Windows Insider" previewers, as the first major update to the operating system nears release.
This build bears all the signs of a RTM (Release to Manufacturing) release, if the Insider rollout is successful.
The build number does not show on the desktop, and in Windows Update it is called "th2_release Professional". The abbreviation is short for Threshold 2, this being the codename for Windows 10.
You can think of Threshold 2 as being a fixed version of the initial release. A future release codenamed Redstone is rumoured to be coming late in 2016, with more far-reaching changes, though thanks to Microsoft's adoption of the "Windows as a service" model it may still be called Windows 10.
During the installation, messages appeared on the screen assuring me that "All your files are exactly where you left them" (a puzzling assurance) and "We’ve got some new features to get excited about."
This second message is presumably addressed at those upgrading from the first Windows 10 release, since there is little new since build 10565 last month.
There are apparently a few fixes, including an end to black tab previews in Edge, Windows no longer forgetting how you login, and "more reliable" downloads from the Windows Store.
More positively, recent Windows 10 builds do feel smoother and more polished than the first release. Those who normally wait for the first service pack before installing a new version of Windows might want to give it a try.

Unless you are going to switch to Linux, stay with an older version of Windows and never get another update or switch to a Mac ... what are you going to do?

Are you implying there is something wrong with those options? I run all of those, and they're all viable. I'm also upgrading a few selected Win7 VMs to Win10 to get used to it. Mostly though I'm sticking with Win7 (and my other machines running Linux, BSD Unix, and OS X).
Unless you are an Insider on the fast ring, you won’t be getting this update just yet.
I am, but the one I got says “ th2_release Professional 10576”, which I will get when I restart next.

I had to take 8.1 on my new i7, so I installed Classic Shell and pretend its a Win 7 box. Works for me, don’t care about what I may be missing just like I never have missed Metro.
Question... Will all my files be on a Microsoft cloud somewhere? Don’t want them snatching my damned personal files. No way. All I know is that Windows10 changed my computer’s logon password without asking me.
After installing Win10, I couldn’t get into my own damned computer. Thought I was screwed for sure. Turns out, Microsoft has my new password on their server and I can always recover it. Thoughtful of them, don’t you think? But the question remains: What other confidential data of yours will they swipe when you install Windows10 and who’s going to control it?
IT @ the office made me “upgrade” from Win 7 to 8.1 this week. Not liking it so far.
Or at least make a backup image of your Win7 system so you can go back or even better...dual-boot Win7 and Win10.
I have not done so yet but I want to have 7, 10 and Linux on all my boxes... Linux I like to use for doing things online that I want to be as secure as possible.
Apple's OS is very good and I can't fault anyone that wants to go that route....it's just not right for me.

I am NOT a techie ( have problems using a damned mouse...for crying out loud! ), I do NOT play music on my laptop, watch movies, nor T.V. shows ( or anything else ), don't play games, don't pay bills, do banking, any kind of business, nor write anything but emails! I read FR, other conservative sites, foreign news papers, and that's about it.
Adding many/any bells and whistles to what I use now is absolutely WORTHLESS to me.
That's unfortunate, Martin, sorry to hear it. I found 8.1 largely unusable on a desktop, and 8.0 was worse.
I believe they would work well on a small handheld device, but thankfully their time has passed. It's odd that your office would be switching -TO- 8.1 at this point. It's essentially a dead issue.
