World's fastest lawnmower reaches 133 mph in Norway

SANDEFJORD, Norway,- A Norwegian team brought their souped-up lawn mower to speeds of nearly 135 mph to take on the 117 mph world record.

The Norwegian Speed Factory team said they started with a Viking T6 lawnmower and rebuilt it into "The World's Fastest Viking" for the speed run at Torp Sandefjord Airport.

The team said the rebuilt mower features 408 horsepower with a V8 engine and has the wheels of a Formula 3 car. The reservoir for collecting grass clippings was converted into a fuel tank and cooling system.

The team said their record-breaking 133.5 mph run was initially in doubt due to weather conditions at the airport.

Driver Pekka Lundefaret said the runway was slippery during the initial test run and the engine filled with water, but he was able to exceed the former record of 117 mph during a subsequent run.

"This is so great, and I just have to thank Viking, our team and everyone who has believed in this project. I had never imagined that we might make a new world record today under these conditions," Lundefaret told Norwegian website Conpot.

The company said the record has been verified by Guinness World Records.

Paul Virik Nilsen, marketing manager for Viking, applauded the accomplishment.

"Today we are proud to have the world's fastest lawnmower. It was an exciting day because of the weather, but Pekka and the rest of the gang did a great job. This is going to get attention worldwide," he said.

I don’t see it doing a very good job actually cutting the grass at that speed.

This my old junker I threw together for about $80 total.
I drive it around the local dirt track and drag strip infield. According to my MPH app on my phone it tops out at 31 MPH.
Just a smaller rear pully and larger tires to change the gear ratio.
I build much nicer ones with quiet exhaust that I have sold to people that use them for racetracks and campgrounds and whatnot.
Since this picture was taken I have changed the exhaust to dual pipes out the back and of course finished up the paint.
Its blaze orange with Camo panels now. Very quiet now.

LOL.

Well, I used to “want” to mow the lawn, but my Mom also said it was a chore for boys.

Thankfully, my Dad let me.

Actually I used the lever on the side that used to raise and lower the blades for a brake by welding and rigging some linkages to the actuator that normally applies the brake.
(I learned that these things need brakes the hard way.) Usually on mowers the belts are the brakes. But when you swap the pulleys from front to back to gain speed they have a tendency to fly off. So, then you have no brakes at 25MPH. Not good.

I use a pistol grip shifter handle that looks like a revolver grip.
And the one pictured has a old 70s style footprint gas peddle that I rigged to the throttle. So it idles very low... the lowest setting that would normally be on throttle control and revs up with the foot pedal.
