Did ExxonMobil commit securities fraud by denying climate change?

New York state's attorney general, Eric Schneiderman, and US Rep. Ted Lieu (D) of California are both looking into whether the world's largest publicly traded oil and gas company intentionally misled the public and company shareholders about its own knowledge of climate change and the inherent risks it posed to the oil industry.

The outcry started in September, when InsideClimate News published an investigation asserting that, since the 1970s, ExxonMobil, has known of fossil fuels' contribution to climate change. The company's own scientists are said to have raised concerns that were contradicted by executives. Another inquiry published in the Los Angeles Times in October also exposed the gap between ExxonMobil's public and private narratives over melting ice in the Arctic.

New York Attorney General Schneiderman launched his own probe last week. A New York state law called the Martin Act gives the Attorney General uniquely wide authority to prosecute securities fraud.

However, man-made Climate Change is a fraud and Exxon should not be disclosing any risk to a fraud.

If that fraud is utilized as the driving excuse to pass legislation which impacts business, the fraud is relevant. However, quantifying the risk of the impact of fraud is nearly impossible because of the questionable sanity of its perpetrators, and the chances of accurately quantifying such risk far less than predicting asteroid impacts or the zombie apocalypse.

Under the circumstances, I fail to see how Exxon/Mobil could be held accountable for their inability to predict the actions of lunatics in large numbers, other than to take measures to secure their facilities and mitigate any foreseeable physical impact.

See what happens to energy prices in the Empire State.

I think it's all about money. NY has to be bleeding revenue from people and businesses leaving.

Maybe that's why at first skim I read "...Vampire State" instead of "...Empire State."

Thank you for coining a new word!

"denires": Plural of denire.

Denire: n. One, who completely correctly refuses to sacrifice scientific accuracy to go along with a popular delusion.

Usage: I am a denire when it comes to anthropogenic global warming.

The criminalization of conservative speech advances.

Republican leaders say nothing.

Bears repeating....

This AG is a Clinton croney, and is on her NY presidential election leadership team.

This is past suspicious, considering this happened just after ExxonMobil discontinued their contributions to Clinton Foundation. It doesn't get any easier than this to connect the dots.
