Apple Inc.’s iPhone 6, 6S Gobble Up 94 Percent Of Smartphone Industry Profit In 2015 Third Quarter
IBTimes ^ | November 16, 2015 | By Luke Villapaz

Apple's record profits in the three months ended Sept. 27
were driven by strong sales of its iPhone 6 and its latest model, the iPhone 6S.

Apple Inc. may not be the biggest maker of smartphones -- that distinction goes to Samsung -- but it is gobbling up almost all smartphone profits so far in 2015, according to new numbers from Canaccord Genuity. Apple took a whopping 94 percent of the total operating income of the nine top global smartphone makers in the three-month period ended in September, up from 85 percent in the year prior, according to analyst Mike Walkley.

Samsung was a distant second with an 11 percent share. The total adds up to over 100 percent because most of the other smartphone makers took losses during the period, according to the equity research firm's estimates. It means the vast majority of smartphone makers from Lenovo to Sony, HTC to BlackBerry all lose money on their smartphones -- and lots of it.

The inability for manufacturers to compete in the premium smartphone market -- phones priced over $400 -- was also blamed for some of the losses. Apple's profit was largely driven by the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, which have been on sale since 2014, as well as its latest handsets, the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus.

Compared to its profits, Apple as a smaller share of unit sales in the industry -- 14.5 percent and 48 million units during the third quarter of 2015. Samsung pulled in a 24.5 percent share and 81 million units during the same period.

Part of the reason is Apple commands a premium for its iPhone, with an average selling price of $670. That's compared to the $180 average selling price of Samsung's handset lineup in the quarter. Apple was also able to draw a huge operating margin for the period -- 37 percent -- compared to the rest of the industry that either saw smaller profits or lost money.

But this is no place for Apple to sit idle. While Apple set an all-time high for operating profit share, analysts are looking to the all-important holiday quarter, when Apple sold 74.5 million iPhones the year prior, an all-time quarterly high for the company.

"There's a lot of skeptics about what growth could be with the 6S," Daniel Ives, senior analyst at FBR Capital Markets, said in a previous interview. "But the main headwind has been around China because so much of the growth is tied to China for Apple." That's in part because by the end of 2015, smartphone shipments growth in the country is expected to slow to 1.2 percent growth, down from 19.7 percent in 2014, according to IDC.

Despite the expectation of a global slowdown, China continues to be Apple's second-largest revenue market for all of Apple's products and services, with $12.5 billion taken in during the three months ended Sept. 27, up 99 percent from $6.3 billion the prior year. Apple doesn't break down exactly how many iPhones it sells by region in its report. But CEO Tim Cook did reveal in an October earnings call that iPhone sales were up 120 percent in the country during the period on a year-on-year basis.

According to Cacacord Genuity again says that Apple has again claimed the lion share, 94% of Smartphone Industry Profit In 2015 Third Quarter with Samsung taking only 11% (yes, that totals 105%, but all other makers lost money!) -- PING!

Uh oh. I am guilty. We have 5 IPhone 6’s in the family. The only one that doesn't have a phone yet is our daughter who is 7. Our family rule is no one gets their own phone until they are 10. She does have an I-Pad so we are not all Scrooge.

When you have a superior product, you can command a higher price and not worry too much about market share as you can make up in profit what you might lose in volume.

Apple’s handsets are perhaps the most sophisticated consumer products ever made.

Glad to see Apple is doing well.

I read that Cook pooh-poohed the idea of merging iOS and OS X -- or more specifically, an iDevice and a Mac.

But the latest couple of OS X GUIs have adopted the (awful) flat, cartoony look from the latest few iOS releases -- a GUI that's made for lower graphic power devices. It's acceptable, I suppose, on an iDevice, but frankly I hate it on OS X. It's the main reason I'm sticking with Mavericks for now.

Note that I have exactly the same criticism of Windows 10 -- for example the three little click boxes at the top-right of a window, for minimize, maximize, and close, are now huge stupid looking rectangles, so that -- should I get the demented desire to put my thumb on my video display screen -- I can pretend it's a tablet. Except that there's no touch on the screen. Horrendous, foolish, stupid UI choices.

Please Apple, don't keep up like this. You can do so much better, it's your strength.

Anyway, Swordmaker, are you planning to post a thread on the declaration of non-merger? I was about to but saw you are up and about, figured I'd give you the option.

My Samsung Galaxie Note 4 is better than any Iphone on the market. Apple has the name going for it and nothing else. I have a nephew who has a degree in computer programming who likes to call Iphones the cell phone for dummies.

My Samsuno Galaxie Note 4 is better than any Iphone on the market. Apple has the name going for it and nothing else. I have a nephew who has a degree in computer programming who likes to call iPhones the cell phone for dummies.

Not by a long shot, NKP_Vet:

Your Galaxy Note4 did not even make the cut on that chart.

Again, where is your Galaxy note 4?

Oh, my, NKP_Vet, again, no Samsung Galaxy Note 4, anywhere in sight!

Let's look somewhere else than Tom's Guide from October 2015.

From Anandtech, September 29, 2015, Benchmark testing:

Oh, the latest Samsung Phone is down at the bottom. . .

This one FINALLY has your Galaxy Note 4 on it. . . around the middle in 10th position, with the iPhone 6S in second, beaten only by a HYBRID LAPTOP with an Intel i5 processor in it.

Again, your Samsung Galaxy Note 4 is bested by TWO iPhones. . . including one in the FIRST position.

This time your "better than any Iphone on the market" is in the twelfth position, and FIVE Apple iOS devices are higher rated than it. . . including FOUR in the first, second, third, and fourth place positions. . . and one that is a TWO year old Model!

This time your vaunted "better phone" is in NINTH position with again Five iOS Devices including FOUR iPhones and FOUR Apple devices in the first FOUR BEST positions.

These are benchmarks done using independent bench tests by independent testing organizations and reviewers. . . without a dog in the fight. They make sure that Samsung is no longer CHEATING on their benchmark tests (ala Volkswagen) by implementing special processor routines whenever they ran into the Geekbench tests. . . and are run clean.

I could go on, but this is enough to blow your ignorant claims out of the water. In every test in the last two years, Apple iOS devices have been the fastest on the market, using a true 64bit processor with a true 64 bit OS, with all native apps and APIs being 64 bit. Not something that Android can claim at all.

I stand by my statement. I always refuse to do business with a company ran by a sodomite, who’s company donates millions worldwide to the killing of unborn children and every other liberal cause this side of the moon. I also don’t drink that mud from Starbucks for the exact same reason.

Apple donates nothing to abotions and as far as I know has never taken a stance on that topic. You are thinking of Microsoft and The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Apple is Climate Change and diversity, including LGBT causes.

Incidentally, Microsoft was donating to those causes far longer and for far more money than Apple ever has. Look it up.

CDMA - Code Division Multiple Access. A technique of multiplexing, also called spread spectrum, in which analog signals are converted into digital form for transmission. For each communication channel, the signals are encoded in a sequence known to the transmitter and the receiver for that channel. The foremost application is digital cellular phone technology from QUALCOMM that operates in the 800MHz band and 1.9GHz PCS band. CDMA phones are noted for their excellent call quality and long battery life.

I love my Windows phone. Better interface. Cheap as hell.

Few apps, but I only use about three apps, anyway.

I can get great phones for my whole family at the price of one iPhone. Get them before they go out of business 8-(

Your Nokia Lumia did not sell well at all, and did not do well on the Geek Bench Tests. That comparison was done a year ago and what you’ve presented is merely a spec sheet comparison with heavy weighting on the Lumia’s camera and screen. Look at the other comparisons and you’ll see the iPhone six had more sensors and more bands. Had they compared it to the iPhone 6plus, it would not have been able to use the screen.

Had they bothered to do a little research, they’d have known Apple iPhones have been using state of the art Corning Gorilla glass since the first iPhone came out.

In video, the iPhone can do 60 and 240 frames per second for slow motion, and super-Solomon, while the Lumia is limited to 30. The iPhone also offers variable time-lapse photography, the Lumia, nope.

The reviewers gave high points to the Nokia for having a Quad Core processor, over the iPhone’s 3rd generation fully functional dual core 64 bit Apple A8 ARM processor. . . which in every bench test ran rings around the Quadcor Snapdragon, which they ignored. They also ignored the fact the tighter programming of iOS doesn’t require the larger RAM that Android necessitates to accomplish the same tasks, and hence gave larger points to the greater system RAM. As I said spec sheet shoot-out that ignored performance. Look at the geek bench tests posted above and see where the Nokia Lumia came in compared in speed. Not good. The iPhone 6 washed the floor with it. . . it didn’t even make the cut. It’s among the also ran phones off the bottom of the charts.

Nice try.

Try reading the reviews that are obviously NOT written by Android users. Read the ones who actually are real users who are not mouthing off Android talking points.

This question is a little off topic, but do you have any comments vis-a-vis Apple CarPlay vs. Android Auto? Have you used either?

My 2009 Ford has Microsoft Sync. . . which sometimes drives me up a wall. It frequently decides to ask me to make a calling choice using an interface that doesn't exist in the car. . . for example, it might say, use the arrow keys to select the correct number from the list. No arrow keys, no displayed list! Or it may say press one on the key pad after the tone to call John, press two on the key pad after the tone to call Larry, press three on the key pad after the tone to call Mary, use the Arrow key to call John on cell after the tone. Beep. This on a voice activated system. . . Only there's no key pad! Next time it will replace the press one, with "say one after the tone." Once or twice I got a mix of say one, press two, select using arrow, scroll, arrrggghhhh!

I've yet to use Apple's Car Play except in a demo. Far better. I've used several proprietary maker's versions from Nissan, GM, Chrysler. . . and of them, Microsoft's Sync with all its quirks was better. . . but Apple's was better than all. My girlfriend just got a brand new Corvette Stingray. I like its system. Proprietary I think. She won't use the phone system. The mapping leaves a lot to be desired. Apple's is far better there. Built in WIFI.
