I'd like to hear fellow FReeper comments on this current Twitter phenomenon. It seems to be a strong spotlight on what is wrong with race relations in this country right now.
There is a hashtag trending right now, #Thanksgivingwithblackfamilies. It's everything warm and funny and self-deprecating. It's a joy to read and see the funny meme photo or gif choices for their tweets. There are even comments from people about how much they love their people and their families. I am white but it's somehow relatable to me anyway and I really enjoyed reading this hashtag. Themes to the tweets are about uncles blessing the food for 10 minutes, aunts saying they haven't seen you since you were 6 months old, do you remember them? Etc.
Then I went to see if there was a similar one for white families. There is: #Thanksgivingwithwhitefamilies. It has only two themes and seems to be mostly contributed to by nonwhites. The themes are that the food is terrible, no seasonings allowed, and that whites are racists and school shooters. Example: when your uncle tells you he only shot up 7 schools in the 1970s. Or what's this strong spice you put on the turkey this year? Salt.
I don't feel this is ok, that white people have become in pop culture barely human. Do we not see that being cruel to one race only is how we get Naziism? I wonder how young white people feel when they see these Twitter trends and see that black people seem to have the social freedom to joke around about themselves and enjoy it, but white people do not have that social freedom?
This example is so glaring it's like racism 100 years ago against blacks. WAS THAT WRONG OR NOT? Was that only wrong to be racist against black people, to seemingly (and wrongly) agree as a society that they were inferior? Or is that a moral wrong against anyone? It is time for society to discuss this openly in public. IS RACISM OK AGAINST WHITES? Remember that none of the generation(s) on Twitter were around when racism was done to blacks.
I'm really sad about this. My sons have friends of all ethnicities. Yet they are learning along with all other young white people that they are not even allowed to be a part of a fun trend because of their skin color.
Proud to say I have never tweeted.
Twit free here too! Wheeeeeeeee!
Great photos. Thanks for the laugh!
I’m sorry about your mom. Thanksgiving is mom to me too and my parents are across the country from me, moved there by a sibling, so I can’t even enjoy their presence such as it is. We’ve had other family losses too this year which I’m sure a lot of FReepers have had.
But I damn sure make the food tasty.
Thanksgiving Dinner In The O'conomyThis year the turkey is in the White House instead of on the table.
“I long for a colorblind society where tribes are kind to one another and feel equal to one another.”
In stark reality, “tribes” most often kill each other over resources and capture the enemy tribe’s women as their slaves. It isn’t natural for tribes to co-exist peacefully.
you are experiencing the preliminaries to the great white genocide that will be happening over the next 5 years.
