  • How Turbans Helped Some Blacks Go Incognito In The Jim Crow Era

There's a weekly trial on the Internet about who may be stealing culture from whom. Earlier this week, the defendants were Iggy Azalea and white gay men. A while back, it was Macklemore and the Harlem Shakers. Now, we have come across a story from the Jim Crow era about cultural mimicry between people of color. In mid-20th century America, the turban was a tool that people of color used for "confounding the color lines," writes Manan Desai, board member of the South Asian American Digital Archive. At the time, ideas of race in America were quite literally black and white. In...
  • Allegations of Voter Fraud in MN DFL Primary

Absentee voting started Friday, six weeks ahead of primary elections. Already there are strong allegations of voter fraud. The attorney for Phyllis Kahn says he got word Thursday night; there might be hundreds of people who are registering and voting using an address that's not their home. Absentee voting kicked-off Friday morning in a hotly contested democratic primary race for the state house between incumbent Phyllis Kahn and Mohamud Noor. Brian Rice, attorney for the Phyllis Kahn Volunteer Committee, claims there's voter fraud. "I think there is a coordinated effort to use this address to bring voters into the DFL...

On any given day of the week, one can turn on the liberal media and hear how the Democratic Party is the one party that cares for black Americans. Liberal pundits such as Chris Matthews, Lawrence ODonnell, and of course Al Sharpton are forever fighting the purportedly racist Republicans on behalf of black Americans. Just a few weeks ago, Nancy Pelosi told Americans that Republicans were trying to take food out the mouths of black Americans by cutting food stamps. She then stated that 50% of food stamp recipients are black Americans. And let us not forget that the Democrats...

I was irritatingly reminded, once again, of just how degenerate our nation has become. I read recently that a football player for the Miami Dolphins, Don Jones, was fined and castigated for voicing his revulsion at the sight of a fellow teammate, Michael Sam, in a lustful display of homosexual eroticism. Which, by the way, has nothing to do with "love." Michael Sam is the latest black pawn of the homosexual movement. As a black person, I can relate to a factor that I think has bearing, at least in part, on Mr. Jones' revulsion. Not only was this erotic...

Race in America is set against the backdrop of horrible historic realities, minefields few want to cross -- just ask Representative Paul Ryan. But if we are ever to focus on children who, for no fault of their own, are often raised in environments where a stable father is missing, violence is predictable, education is eschewed, drugs are prevalent and dependency threatens freedom; we must stand up and speak facts before another generation of children are lost. Racism is the normal explanation for the decline of the black family, but that analysis does not hold up. Thomas Sowell has shown...

Members of the Congressional Black Caucus believe that President Obama's judicial nominees represent "an appalling lack of diversity," but the top White House spokesman dismissed that accusation. "The president's commitment here and the approach he takes is fairly clear," White House press secretary Jay Carney told reporters when asked during the press briefing about the CBC's objection to his latest nominations within the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. "The president has had more African-American women confirmed to the federal court than any president in history," he noted, adding that he has appointed several black judges within the 11th Circuit,...

Leaders of the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) plan to publicly rebuke President Obama over a lack of diversity in his federal judicial picks. The lawmakers are organizing a Capitol Hill press conference as early as this week to decry what Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-D.C.) called the appalling lack of African American representation among Obama's nominees, particularly in the 11th Circuit, which includes Georgia, Florida and Alabama. The Democrats also contend several of Obamas nominees have championed policies that either discriminate against minorities, or are just plain racist. We have very grave concerns [with certain nominees] given disparities that are...

The Milky Ways black hole is about to gobble up its first dinner, and astronomers are hoping to have front row seats when it happens. A huge gas cloud, about three times the mass of Earth, is on course to collide with the supermassive black hole at the heart of our galaxy in March. Astronomers expect the gas cloud will swing so close to the black hole that it will heat up to the point where it produces spectacular X-rays.

Five years in to Barack Obamas presidency, the number of African-Americans participating in the labor force has hit rock bottom. The news media has ignored this stunning revelation from Fridays monthly jobs report by the Labor Department. The exception has been PBS, which interviewed economist Dean Baker who had written about it in a report published Friday. The drop in labor force participation was sharpest for African Americans, who saw a decline of 0.3 percentage points to 60.2 percent, the lowest rate since December of 1977. The rate for African American men fell 0.7 percentage points to 65.6 percent, the...

A new study released Monday found that nearly half of all black males and almost 40 percent of white males are arrested by the time they are 23-years old. The analysis of national data from 1997 to 2008 of teenagers and young adults arrest histories excluding traffic violations were published Monday in the journal of Crime & Delinquency. While there was variation in the rate of arrest between black and white men, there was little racial variation in the arrest rates among women of different races.

Part of the Genius of the African American Spirituals is their ability to treat of serious themes, such as the final judgment, in a creatively compelling manner that steered a middle course between unproductive fear and prideful presumption.

A Rio Rancho teen just wanted to dress up for the holidays at his school. Other kids dressed as Santa, so he did too. Now, his teacher is under fire for a comment he made that some parents are calling racist. Students at Cleveland High School were told they could dress up as Santa, elves or reindeer. But when a black student chose to be Santa Claus, he was called out for the color of his skin. "Christopher, don't you know Santa Claus is white? Why are you wearing that?" Michael Rougier remembered. When Rougier learned that is how a...

**SNIP** Some of the vacuum in support and implementation of the act has been filled by community groups. "The glitches have not prohibited one ounce of enrollment in the African American community," says Barbara Williams-Skinner, co-chair of the National African American Clergy Network, which says it has reached out to 5,000 pastors across the country to promote enrollment under the act. Williams-Skinner says the network has focused its efforts on 13 states with the largest share of the 7 million African Americans without health insurance. For many in that demographic, problems with computer enrollments haven't been very relevant. "Many in...

(video) Rapper Kanye West told 105.1 FM radio in New York City earlier this week that its because Black people don't have the same level of connections as Jewish people (video follows with transcript and commentary): KANYE WEST: We dont got it like that. When I tell you only seven black billionaires, look at marginalization, and we feel like we happy because me and Rick Ross got it made, or I got a spread outside, a couple of us, or they put a black president.
