You mean “loved” it ;-)
Don’t forget a pellet rifle for when TSHTF!
They’ll come in handy for killing small game for supper. (note the absence of the “/s” tag)
Might I suggest the Diana brand of pellet rifles.
Squirrels ain’t bad eatin’. They can be quite tasty when fried and smothered in gravy. Biscuits, cole slaw, and mashed potatoes make for fine sides.
:-)
I can’t thank all of you enough for your timely replies. I am presently leaning towards a 6.8 0r larger caliber. I have 3 neophyte questions.
Barrel material. chromed, stainless, melonite, etc.?
do I need forward assist and port cover?
lightweight or medium weight barrel?
factory trigger good enough for 1-1/2” groups?
had a mini 14 once that shot 6” groups, I just can’t stand minute of watermelon groups!
Yes, I employ .308 bolt action and 30-06 bolt action for deer on my land.
I have ARs in .556 and in 300blackout used mainly for sport, but I did down a feral hog with the 300 while out on a scout. (Hogs and coyotes are ‘shoot on site’ on my land, along with them dadblamed beavers.)
Ever since I was a kid I’ve sat in a tree stand with a bolt action and just naturally choose it when preparing to go hunting. It would seem weird to me to sit in a stand with a AR. Kinda like sitting in a duck blind with a rifle. Just wouldn’t seem right.

No, its just a joke, and as grown ass men we can joke about whatever we please.
To me its a way of answering ‘Do you have guns?’ with “nunya damn business, come and see for yourself”
The first thing you are going to need is a cheap boat.
Squirrel dumplins.
MMMMM Whatchu talkin bout!
A good choice for a multi-use rifle is the Ruger Gunsite Scout. It’s not a semi-auto, but extremely versatile. In .308 it would fill your needs, and as it’s a bolt gun, there’s no learning curve.

Yes. That being said, be very careful when building the lower and handling the little springs. They tend to shoot across the garage and under heavy, hard-to-move items when you least expect it. A magnet on a stick is a recommended build tool.
When Scarborough on PMSNBC this morning said, Why does anyone need A .223 for sport? I wondered what the answer should be. I have. .223, and I don’t shoot deer with it...I take it to the range and shoot beer cans. But I can do that with my .22. So how do we answer this question...and I’m not talking about the 2nd amendment shield...(I understand, “because the Constitution...yada). What’s the answer? (I have one to protect myself from a obviously emerging tyrannical government...but that answer causes a circular argument).
Check this for buying from individuals. Be careful if you decide to buy though. It should be treated like buying something from Craig’s list.
If you meet up with anyone make sure it is in a public place and do not let them know where you live.
I’ve got to admit that people like Scarborough are part of the reason I need a new rifle. Last night a commentator for CNN characterized the 5.56 as an “evil” round for an “evil” gun. With nitwits like this around, you can,t have too many guns. A guy at the gunstore told me that guns get lonely if left alone in a gunsafe.
I can point it out that it is just as relevant and funny as “Bush’s fault” too.
Note, neither have been funny for years and the phrase is probably on the terrorist watch list.

There are hundreds of models you can’t go wrong with and ARs are fine deer rifles where they are legal to hunt with. The AR is also a terrific home defense weapon but I would stress you really need to be trained to use it well for defense, particularly in your home. When you get your new weapon and are comfortable with it go out and find a good company and spend a few bucks on a defensive carbine class. Not a marksmanship or shooting class but one that specializes in using your AR to defend yourself. There is so much to learn that you have never thought of about using your weapon in and around your home, under stress, and effectively against bad guys. Independence Training in Arizona is one of best www.independencetraining.com - If you are nowhere near the west you can ask the for a local referral. There are a million ranges and instructors around the country and in your home town but only a handful of instructors with this kind of specialized and life saving knowledge.
