Scott Weiland, the instantly recognizable voice behind Stone Temple Pilots and Velvet Revolver who was known for his dynamic stage presence, has died. He was 48. Weiland's manager confirmed the news to Rolling Stone.
Weiland passed away in his sleep on a tour stop in Bloomington, Minnesota, according to an official Instagram post. In addition to sharing the news of his death, it read, "At this time we ask that the privacy of Scott's family be respected."
TMZ reported that Weiland was found dead on his tour bus in Minnesota at around 9 p.m. Thursday night while touring with his current group the Wildabouts. The group was scheduled to perform at the Medina Entertainment Center in Medina, Minnesota Thursday night.
Jane's Addiction guitarist Dave Navarro announced the news of Weiland's passing in a since-deleted tweet shortly after midnight EST. "Just learned our friend Scott Weiland has died," he wrote. "So gutted, I am thinking of his family tonight."
Weiland's Velvet Revolver bandmate, guitarist Dave Kushner, tweeted shortly after Navarro "RIP Scott Weiland."
Weiland was born Scott Richard Kline on October 27th, 1967 in San Jose, California. His mother, Sharon Williams, and father, Kent Kline, divorced two years later. His stepfather, Dave Weiland, adopted him at age five. He moved with his family to Ohio for a number of years and returned to California with his family when he was 14.

Drug overdose most likely. Sad.
for much of his career, Weiland publicly battled addiction
When I see a celebrity has died young and unexpectedly I know it’s drugs.
RIP to a great singer. I’ve read he had a pretty harsh heroin addiction in the past. Hope it wasn’t an overdose, but he was awfully young...
Wow. Pop musician dies. I wonder if there is any sort of precedence for this sort of thing? These guys seem to have a higher mortality than Navy SEALS. Does CDC have a study on this? Their insurance and mod rates must be crazy.
Although the name of the group was very familiar, I had no idea what songs they did, not liking much of anything since the 80s. So I just gave a listen. As expected, I didn’t really care for it. To me, they sounded very similar to Hooty and the Blowfish, who’s music I could also live without. Still, it’s sad to hear he’s died, and so young.
Yep I agree.
When they came out, the comparison was to Pearl Jam. Very much Seattle-sound, grunge.
Probably best to stick to other topics you have more understanding of, STP had a very signature sound right up there with AIC, Sound Garden, Nirvana etc...epic bands that sound nothing like HATB.
Hootie and the Blowfish?!
I thought he died in the 90’s. I was teenager during his reign of terror. I remember that “when the dogs can smell her” song playing over and over and over on MTV and the radio.
???????
Not shocked..had heavy drug addiction for years & then supposedly was clean, fell off wagon. Sadly, that’s how these stories usually play out..they think they can still consume same amount of drugs that they used to do & heart can’t take it.
I saw them few times when STP, awesome shows...he was electric on stage.
RIP Weiland
STP was a good band for a short period, then he went into rehab and poof no more STP.
I could never tell the difference between Pearl Jam and Stone Temple Pilots, they were that similar. I was never a big fan of this genre though.
yep.. wow, never heard this story before. rock star after years of severe drug addiction. this guy was a heroin addict.
Drug addiction consumes and ultimately destroys everything it touches. No one is immune, no matter how talented. Addicts die beat up, lonely and in a state of mental and spiritual anguish. Heroin had been making a comeback among the young. Hopefully stories like this will make people think twice before taking drugs (or drinking to excess, for that matter).
He had a great opportunity to turn around his stalled career with Velvet Revolver.
He decided he’d rather do heroin.
I read they locked him away for the recording of their 1 album to keep him clean.
I think “Fall to Pieces” is one of he best rock songs of the decade. It was just straight up hard rock. The video implied drug addiction and in retrospect had a lot of sadness in it.
