What Director J.J. Abrams Did to Make Sure Star Wars: The Force Awakens Wouldn't 'Suck'

"George Lucas told a story about everyman, everywoman characters who were nobodies who had to step up and become somebody. The idea that there would be a new crop of nobodies in the Star Wars universe who didn't realize yet they would become somebody, that was a very powerful feeling."

To create a story of the new "nobodies," Abrams wrote the Force Awakens script with Lawrence Kasdan, who co-wrote The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi (plus Raiders of the Lost Ark for Lucas, too). They also had the "somebodies" coming back, including Harrison Ford as Han Solo, Carrie Fisher as Leia Organa and Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker. "We wanted to see them after 30 years," Kasdan told PEOPLE. "There was nothing really that we had to do but there were enormous possibilities of what we could do."

...

Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy revealed that the film was screened for Lucas. The verdict? "He really liked it," she said.

It will be fun.

They are all fun. Even the one with the Sambo Jar Jar Binks.

People need to relax.

No fair going to the second movie and bringing up Khan. That actor was annoying.

Destroying Vulcan? Oh well.

Same reason the Mad Magazine parodies were so useful.

I enjoyed the first one. . Then they stuck in cumberbund for Khan and that was just ridiculous.

Jar-Jar.

I dunno. If they were to go back to Episode VI and throw Jar Jar into the planetary anus known as the Sarlacc at the Great Pit of Carkoon, then I gotta say I'd ante up. "Meesa being digested! Meesa being digested!!" for a thousand years. I guess there'd need to be an intermission, though.

I was a preteen when TOS premiered and I grew up loving the series. Abrams slammed his fist down on the table and simply obliterared decades worth of storytelling with one blow. It was Bobby Ewing walking out of the shower. I don’t trust him.

Sure, it was ridiculous, but was it really any more ridiculous than Cadet Kirk being given permanent command of a starship before he even graduates the academy? Or Spock dating Ohura (as hot as she is) despite the fact that Vulcans only mate once every 7 years?

I liked Star Trek when it first came out and still do like it.

The original series is on every Saturday night on METV which I get over the air. They have gotten into the third season now and tho I did not notice it originally, I can now tell it is going down a bit.

Still some good ones but it probably should have been canceled when it was.

The biggest f-u to Star Trek fans by a Star Wars fanboi ever. They should burn every copy of both film abominations, bury the ashes and salt the earth above.

Kasdan will make it work. 1,2 and 3 suck because of his absence.

the mess of the Star Trek reboot

"Star Trek: Into Darkness" was one of the 10 worse films I've ever seen. I can't understand why Trekkies didn't riot and burn down the studio after that atrocity.

Yeah, it was. I have firsthand knowledge that they wanted Cumberbatch for ANY ST role so they though of Khan. It’s like buying a dress for your girlfriend,,,and you don’t have a GF.

The first one was great, and I don’t care what anyone says: lens flares are still cool as hell.
