(vanity) Fun Friday Challenge. Where in the World am I?

OK, so, I stumbled on this website a long time ago and again today.

GeoGuessr.com

It's basically an online game or challenge to Guess "Where a particular Google street view image was taken"

And you have a very limited ability to move but can zoom in for clues.

Occasionally, there are street signs but more often than not, you are in what looks like the middle of nowhere.

Your clues are the landscape, the dirt, the types of trees etc.

It's not easy.

No need to "Download the app".

Just slide down the page and choose "Single player" for North America, for example.

I’ve seen this before. It’s fun but difficult. There is also a language one where you hear a sentence in a language and pick from 4 choices as to what language is being spoken.

I did the language one a while back and it was much harder that I would have thought.

As for GeoGuesser.

When you see a certain landscape and are certain it is a place that you have seen before and pick say, the Delaware shore, and it turns out to be some place in Wisconsin, that seems crazy.

A while back I actually nailed a location within 20 miles on some Oregon mountain road in the middle of nowhere.

I thought the language one was much easier. I just tried the geography one and guessed Alberta when it was Finland. Only about 6k miles off...

Thanks that was fun. I got lucky on two. Got within 75 miles in the Michigan UP because of the types of trees, and nailed one within yards because it showed a church and street name.

You are in Cliff Clavin’s kitchen.

Obviously not on the same planet you were born on. I know I’m not. Freakin’ bizarro world these days.

Ah yes, I’ve played with that a bit before. Sometime very hard.

Where is this place?

I started out with Up State NY, but I'm thinking more high country. Montana or South Dakota.

I picked an area outside Billings and was 520 miles of course, as it is in Washington State.

Still not bad.

The roofs seem too flat for a state that gets a lot of snow, but the vegetation isn’t right for California, and the houses all have chimneys. Then again, the street and curbs are in good shape, which argues against snowplows.

I’m stumped. :)

Nice insight.

This is what I’m talking about.

It’s not easy.

Thanks!

It certainly isn’t easy. It’s fascinating, though.

Your chimney observation was awesome.

I have tended to look at the trees and contour of the roads as well as the sky.

I think it’s a fun challenge.

Where in the US is this?

You can look 360 degrees around and it all looks the same.

I haven't made my choice yet.

I'm leaning toward Texas or Oklahoma but I'm not sure.

Correct location.

224 miles a way from my guess.

In Kansas.
