Steely Dan Greatest Hits 1972-1978 / 1980-2003
by Andrew Dickman 28 videosâ¢
The essential Steely Dan songs. I didn't realize this list has over 100,000 views! I just updated it with all songs from "#SteelyDan" except for "Bad Sneakers," which I nearly got. Jokes aside, this is a list for you that love or are starting to listen to Steely Dan.
I personally prefer studio versions of all the songs, but some live versions are the only YouTube versions available.

Done up in blueprint blue
It sure looks good on you
And when you smile for the camera
I know they’re gonna love it
“Hey Nineteen” was about their mixing engineer (Elliot Scheiner) who went on a date with a young girl ~ 20 years younger than him.
As an aside, Elliot Scheiner went on to create the engineering of Acura’s high-end sound system.
“The pair is also known for their near-obsessive perfectionism in the recording studio..”
Indeed. In an interview from long ago they named Rick Derringer as their favorite studio guitarist. Beyond being extremely talented, he played exactly what they asked on every song. The other guitar players they used over the years, very talented also, apparently kept adding their own licks, which drove Becker and Fagen crazy.
Rose darling come to me
Snake Mary dreams along
I would guess she’s in Detroit
With lots of money in the bank
Although I could be wrong
And Roger Nichols was an incredible recording engineer.
Don't know much about the back stories of rock.I figured out, only fairly recently, that "And Your Bird Can Sing" was about Jagger and his "bird",Marianne and I read once that the "sweet, sweet Connie" in "We're An American Band" was a real rock groupie who did certain "favors" for rock groups.
The things you think are precious, I just don't understand.
“They call Alabama the Crimson Tide.”
“somebody else’s favorite song...”
“In a VH1 list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time, Steely Dan were listed at #82”
VH1 has their head up their ass. SD should be in the top 10.
M4L Steely Dan
Rick Derringer was formerly known as Rick Zehringer when he formed “The McCoys” - a local (my hometown) Dayton, OH band. They had a small hit with “Hang On Sloopy”. Rick went on to be quite the studio musician on many tracks including Weird Al’s “Eat It” as well as being a part of Edgar Winter’s group.
Back in the day, the McCoys were the opening act for Simon & Garfunkle at a local teen night club with a stage about 1 foot high. The McCoys stayed on as the backing band for S&G during their PSR&T tour. Not a bad show for $1 admission.
So many to choose from for a favorite but ‘Deacon Blues’ gets my vote.
My kids (10 & 12) heard a few Dan songs in the family car they really liked and asked about the band... I told them how they chose their name!
Katie Lied.
You can see it in her eyes.
Eww.
Drink Scotch whisky all night long. And die behind the wheel. They got a name for the winners in the world. I want a name when I lose.
My favorite SD song....
No marigolds in the promised land
There’s a hole in the ground
Where they used to grow
Any man left on the Rio Grande
Is the King of the World
As far as I know
