Robert Reich Makes The case For Ted Cruz

Robert Reich January 20 at 11:40am

5 reasons Ted Cruz is even more dangerous than Donald Trump.

1. He's more fanatical. Trump is a bully and bigot but doesn't hew to any sharp ideological line. Cruz is a fierce ideologue: He denies the existence of man-made climate change, rejects same-sex marriage, wants to abolish the Internal Revenue Service, believes the 2nd amendment guarantees everyone a right to guns, doesn't believe in a constitutional divide between church and state, favors the death penalty, opposes international agreements, embraces a confrontational foreign policy, rejects immigration reform, demands the repeal of "every blessed word of Obamacare," and takes a strict "originalist" view of the meaning of the Constitution.

2. Cruz is a true believer. Trump has no firm principles except making money, getting attention, and gaining power. But Cruz really does detest the federal government, and has spent much of his life embracing radical right economic and political views. When Cruz said "we are facing what I consider to be the epic battle of our generation," he wasn’t referring to jihadist terrorism but to Obamacare.

3. He's Smarter. Trump is no slouch but he hasn't given any indication of a sharp mind. Cruz is razer-sharp: It's not just his degrees from Princeton and Harvard Law, along with an impressive record at Harvard, or even his winning arguments before the Supreme Court. For his entire adult life he's been a fierce debater with a intensely-logical debater's mind.

4. He's more disciplined and strategic. Trump is all over the place, often winging it, saying whatever pops into his mind. Cruz hews to a clear script and a carefully crafted strategy. He plays the long game (as he's shown in Iowa). Cruz's legal career entailed a sustained use of the courts to achieve conservative ends, and he plots his moves carefully.

5. Cruz is a loner who's willing to destroy institutions. Trump has spent his career using the federal government and making friends with big shots. Not Cruz. Most of his Republican colleagues in the Senate detest him. And Cruz is eager to destroy: He has repeatedly crossed to the other side of the Capitol and led House Republicans toward fiscal cliffs. In the Fall of 2013, Cruz's strident opposition to Obamacare- including a 21-hour talking marathon-led in a significant way to the shutdown of the federal government.

Both men would be disasters for America, but Cruz would be the larger disaster.

What do you think?

..Most of his Republican colleagues in the Senate detest him.

I consider that to be one of his best qualities. I wouldn't give a plugged fracking nickel for EITHER of my two RINO Senators.

They talk the best conservative game every 6 years and they come home and lie their ass off and then go back to DC and feather their beds some more and do exactly opposite of what they promised to get there.

I think you were a huge disaster when you were in power and that you have absolutely no room to talk.

Cruz is the conservative dream candidate. I am able to vote for someone I agree with on most everything, first time since 1984. Amazing.

When Robert Reichhhhhh calls someone an ideologue, I can be pretty certain I’ve found a principled Constitutionalist.

Thos. Jefferson (who cut out parts of his bible he didn’t like) wrote something about separation of Church and state a little after 1800 to some Danbury Baptists, that’s about as close as you’re going to get to “separation of church and state” in “The Constitution”. There’s something about an Establishment Clause, Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, that just means the feds can’t mess with state churches. It has been violated by the US Government making the Gaia religion of unscientific climate change the official religion. Little Robby Reich should have learned that by now if he wants control of other people’s money.

Wow, a pretty astute observation from a left wing nut. Shocked,

I think you will find few on Free Republic, that do not agree that Cruz would be the biggest disaster for liberals, socialists, fascists, and statists in US history.

IF he can herd, drive, or intimidate McConnell and Ryan...or more likely, Schumer and Ryan to approve, fund or defund, do or undo, what Cruz wants.

I support Cruz for his positions. Cruz is a Cubo-Canuck Jefferson.

I would support Trump for what he could do if elected. He is a bonebreaker.

We should hit the beach with the first man to hit the beach....but the beach needs hit.

If Cruz needs to Cromwell DC, then we should shave our heads.

If Trump needs his coat held while he schlonges McConnel/Ryan....then let us hold his coat.

Either man will be the best President since Reagan, and then Ike before that, and Coolidge before that.

But that’s just my opinion and I don’t feel strongly about it. :-)

Ted Cruz sounds like a constitutional conservative BUT he got a loan from banks that got a bailout, and the fact that there are no banks left that are not tied to global corporate banks because of the bailout well that just a phony excuse he is a very bad man, a nasty man, a maniac, a liar, a deceiver and not nice that’s all he is not nice, he was nice two weeks ago but he is not nice now since we just learned now, it just came out, he tried to bury it deep in plain site, he got a loan from a bailout bank, hey it was a big loan too, yeah he was a nice guy until he went up in the Polls he probably bought those Polls with all that money he borrowed from the bailed out banks, he wouldn’t use his own money he is a bad man.

Amazing that even Reich can see it, but others cannot. We get one more election. After that it’s 50/50 whether we’ll have to vote from the rooftops...

I love the argument that "Nobody likes Ted Cruz" made by media elite and politicians feeding at the trough.

Enough people of his state elected him based on their desire for him to represent them in Washington on federal matters effecting their way of life.

Now when it comes to making ignorant arguments dismissive to other's views I'm not so sure the "everyone hates Cruz" bunch is saying more about themselves thru these editorials than about Ted Cruz the elected representative senator?

I am for Cruz in the primary and will vote for him. But he will not win it here in Georgia. That belongs to Trump, IMO. Polls suggest it, too.

I’ll end up voting for Trump in the general election and I’ll do so not holding my nose like I did with McCain and Romney.

I will never vote for a Rubio, a Bush, a Christie, a Kasich, a Carson or anyone but those two.

I never heard Cruz advocate a state religion. Has Robert Reich?

I think Trump is a two edged sword. His values don't seem to be solid, more of a convenience so he can cut the deal of a lifetime.

That 'bonebreaker' might be a loose canon on deck.

One thing is certain. There is a storm coming.

Best evidence there is Trump's scorched earth approach to burying his opponents early in the primary like a Panzer Tank.

He could have lost Iowa barely to Cruz, and then ran the tables elsewhere, and kept Cruz as an ally. That scenario is now dead in the water., and 10,000,000 conservatives won't forget.it.

He'll regret it later.

Reich.....funny little mandwarftroll.....Residing in obscurity for decades and now emerging out from underneath the ‘bridge’ he guards - on the prowl to destroy the enemies of his Masters (Clintons).

Years ago I remember reading about his being ‘best buds’ with Slick in college. You know, roommates or classmates and what not. Somehow I can’t get the image out of my head that they were ‘best buds’ because Reich was his ‘hound’ who went around campus finding all the coeds who weren’t wearing panties and “pointing” them out to Slick.....
