History is replete with examples of warrior societies enslaving the toolmakers to provide the technologies the warriors are incapable of producing themselves for the conquest of even more cultures. The Klingon Empire is a fictional example of this principle based upon a wide variety of actual historical cultures such as the Arabs, Mongols, and others.
On the other hand they could be a bunch of dicks who just ran out of more primitive locals to kill and oppress....
We currently have technology such that Aristotle would have considered us gods. Are we that much more advanced and peaceful?
Also, consider that, just because some beings have ACCESS to technology, it does not mean that the tech USERS are philosophically advanced. Think of space-going Somali pirates.
