“Good to go for papaya!”

Normally we’d have mangoes too at this time of year - literally by the ton since we have two mature mango trees in the yard. But, we had two or tree big typhoons last year and also had to have them pruned and they went into shock dropping their leaves. They’ve just started flowering again. After the last typhoon (The one that destroyed Saipan) I picked up LITERALLY 1600 pounds of green mangoes from the yard. Since all the trees on island had the same problem there was no way to sell them or even give them away and they ended up being thrown away.

We have banana, mango, papaya, passion fruit, Thai lemon tree and a brand new star fruit tree. We’re thinking about a macadamia nut tree in the front yard for shade.

The real issue is the tropics never get cold enough to kill any bugs

in honor of Johnny, lets make this a bang up garden season....

I'll be planting the tobacco seeds that I harvested from the plants I grew last season from seeds he sent me! I'm calling it "Nicotiana FreeRepublica"! :D

Maybe. A minimum of 6-9 hours of sun is needed for most veggies that have “fruits”, such as tomatoes. That doesn’t necessarily mean direct sun.

In fact, if the temps are very hot, they appreciate the shade. Even when there is shade, the light usually dapples through all during the day. The light intensity is also greater than it would be indoors in front of a window.

The back of my house faces southwest, and my raised beds are along the lower patio. They get no morning sun, as they are shaded by the house. In the afternoon one of those is shaded most of the day by a tree. I can grow lettuce there all summer long-the shade is beneficial.

What you could do is experiment by putting things in pots this year, and see which ones will grow there. If a pot is struggling, then move it to a sunnier spot. The ones that do well enough, you can transplant or just let them grow, take note and direct plant them next year.

Losing a long time doggy friend sucks. I am missing my little Jack-Russell/rat terrier mix, but we don’t plan to get any more pets for a good long while.

Lots of stuff to do that are hindered by pet ownership, and hubby never likes to have a pet especially indoors.

Not me. I have a lemon tree that I’m going to have to research how to transplant myself.

She used to post quite a few years ago. Hell of a gardener.

I believe she was from Louisiana.

Too bad about the wasted fruit. I love mangoes and lemons the most right after watermelon and cantaloupe. I can see what you are saying about the bugs!

JDAB just quit posting one day in 2012. I was worried that something really bad may have happened. I can’t remember who it was, but one of the Freepers was able to track her down. She was fine - apparently just lost interest or too busy to continue.

Green house is major on my list of things to get done this year - last year the money was spent on medical bills. Crossing fingers for a better year and money to get the green house.

We have a lousy service provider, and our DSL in notoriously slow, so I was thinking it might be.

That’s a good idea! I don’t want to buy more expensive shrubs if I can grow edibles there. But if I can get the choys to grow there, I’d be really happy. I wonder if Daikon would like those conditions. I love that stuff for salads and soups and stir fries.

I think everyone who has seeds from Johnny will certainly treasure them and remember him fondly for many years.

Wednesday was a bright balmy 62 degrees in the Bender gardens here in Benderville and I took advantage of it to dig up the old strawberry plants. (Actually Lady Bender kicked me out of the house). I have 10 dozen new starts from a little nursery south of us a couple of miles that will go in a new spot. I have never seen this much rain for this extended period but the north coast rivers are staying within their banks but our roads are in sad shape with occasional closures.

I’m glad you said that...

I have always wanted a Meyers lemon tree. I think I am going to go out and finally get one.

I have no excuse and if Greeneyes can grow one, then so can I. I am going to give it a try.

Thank you!
