As a one-man shop, I am my own IT department (mostly). I do not go to any formal training on new Windows versions, so I am certain I would make mistakes.

It is the way large s/w places are koving. They want a perpetual revenue model for things already paid for, how they can eek out more and force customers to continue to pay for an already purchased product. As well as forced upgrades whether desired or not.

Its been a longtime goal for the industry. Since not much blowback is occuring other companies are taking note people will accept it.

I can’t really speak to the “enterprise” functionality, but after “upgrading” my laptop I really did not like it much even after tweaking it and adding back a traditional start button. The second thing I tried was going to a completely clean Windows 10 install and I hated it just as much.

I loaded the factory default laptop image back from DVDs, cleaned out all the bloatwear, installed about 200 Windows 7 updates, loaded up the programs that I use and now I seem to be back to a nice clean smooth running system. So I guess after basically wasting several days I can thank Microsoft for my cleaned up system.

I have Office 2007 running on a Windows 10 box. No problems.

Any insight on how Office 2003 might do?

[[They want a perpetual revenue model for things already paid for, how they can eek out more and force customers to continue to pay for an already purchased product. ]]

Yup that’s exactly what Adobe photoshop did- force people into lifetime monthly payments

[[Since not much blowback is occurring other companies are taking note people will accept it.]]

The problem is that because people have no choice but to upgrade really, they count this as ‘approval’ because the people aren’t taking up arms to resist- this is exactly how Adobe portrayed the whole situation “Well people are not complain much, therefore they must like it” Basically

[[I thought on unix machines they would set up and run a virtual windows box and it runs fine in there.]]

The problem though is that windows 10 is a massive spyware operating system now- and even in a virtual box, it is phoning home to MS while being used, and from what I understand, there’s no way to effectively turn off the spyware completely- you can turn some off, others you can’t, and even if you could, forced automatic updates will likely keep changing your preferences on you-

Windows 10 is a huge improvement over Windows 8.x. But because of some interface quirks, it does take some getting used to.

No. What are you running it on now?

That is why I have not updated Adobe Photoshop since they went to “the cloud”.

You don’t have to use the cloud features for your data.

Personally, I think the Windows 10 privacy thing is a bunch pf hype generated by the paranoid and the anti-Microsoft crew here. Windows 10 doesn’t put any of your files in the cloud unless you copy them to the OneDrive folder (OneDrive is the cloud storage service that MS offers). Don’t want them in the cloud? Then don’t put the files there, just leave them wherever you store then now. It’s funny to hear all this FUD over it from people who routinely use DropBox or AppleDrive, both cloud storage systems, without a second thought.

The other area I have heard privacy concerns is over the Cortana search feature in Windows 10. While I don’t know all the details on this, I do believe that it does use your search history on the computer to try and improve search results. I do know you can totally shut that off.

If you have concerns, I would recommend that you check out this web page, which has links to lots of more info:

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/windows-privacy-faq

And full disclaimer - I work for Microsoft (but everything I post is my personal opinion, and does not necessarily represent the position of Microsoft).

Last I checked, MS had around 80,000 employees, all happily using Windows 10, at work and at home. We wouldn’t be doing that if it were funneling our private info to some nefarious government org. JMHO.

Thank you for the link, and the full disclosure.

I do not plan on upgrading my current equipment, but this is the year for some replacement hardware. I have been considering Win10, but also looking at Linux with windows VM for some tasks.

I work in the aerospace software industry.

If only Windows 10 was the stable, dependable OS Windows 7 or XP was. Problems daily from this. You have to stop and reboot without even knowing why. We just say “It’s just Windows 10”.

You don’t have to be on the cloud? Just try getting rid of that if you aren’t a tech.

No. It has a little windows icon on the lower left where the start used to be. You click on it and it changes to tablet mode - absolutely useless. You right click and get some of the features a regular start button gives you, but no “All Programs.”
It is a pain.

Many corporations will not allow Win 10 inside. IT phones home too much sensitive information like filename and the content of files. And, no, I don’t care if such things seem “opt-in” or “optional”. There mere fact that the capability exists is enough to say it will be abused or negligently transmit devastating information. Yes, personal financial files or trade secrets or intellectual property can be devastating to a company if leaked.

You are most welcome, and please let me know if you have any follow-up questions.

Linux is a good OS too. I always recommend that people seriously considering a switch set it up in a VM or a spare machine and try and use it for everything for a couple of weeks. Some people do that and are happy, others get frustrated, usually some app they need and can’t run there. To each his own.

But I wouldn’t look at Linux as a way to be free of privacy and security concerns. You are FAR more at risk from some 3rd-party application - regardless of OS - than anything from the OS.

Also, it is worth mentioning that At Microsoft every group has some team of people, they are typically part of the org that includes lawyers, that is in charge of privacy policy and enforcing that. Every employee has to go through this annual Standards of Business and Conduct training, which among other things has a large section devoted to privacy. Every employee has a hotline number and email they can contact with questions over what is allowed, or to report any concerns. No system is perfect, but hopefully from this you get the sense that customer privacy is important at Microsoft. People here realize that if the customers don’t trust us, they won’t buy our products. Then we’re out of a job, and no sane person wants that :)

I'm not a tech. You have to actually put things into the OneDrive folder for them to go to the cloud.
