While a great many people argue about how and whether the human race will end, there's no doubt as to the primary cause and catalyst of the last major extinction here on Earth: a massive, large body from outer space colliding with Earth. Some 65 million years ago, an asteroid about 5-10 kilometers in diameter struck what is now the Gulf of Mexico, wiping out roughly 30-50% of the species on our world and ending the age of the dinosaurs. Are we headed for another such event in the near future? Reader David Bertone wants to know:
I have a question for you regarding [this article I read on] how our galaxy's disc displaces comets in the Oort cloud every 26-30 million years, causing periodic extinctions and bombardment of comets on Earth⦠I was wondering if we are in any danger of this happening in our lifetimes, and if the theory itself is credible?
To be honest, there's always a danger of a mass extinction, but the key is quantifying that danger accurately.

I've done some research, and I've narrowed down the date. It's either going to be on July 20th, 52536 A.D., or January 20th, 2017. The latter date is iffy, depending on whether Obama decides to give up the nuclear "football" to our new president next year. Obama might fumble it and doom us all.
I’m less worried about an asteroid, the NK and ME than our own government.
You mean - all those piles & piles of cash Bill & Hillary
- and others - have piled up . . will be . . . burned up?
Yes. It’s called the Day of the Lord, or Judgment Day. The earth will melt with fervent heat, Jesus will return to earth and His Story will end when He takes His people home to Heaven. Millions of us pray for that every day.
Anything from a solar ejecta "Carrington event" to a cyber attack to God-knows-what might do it.
What causes a grid collapse won't matter. What will matter are the consequences.

Yes, if the grid goes down most people won’t last for two weeks.
Not all the dinosaurs were wiped out 65 million years ago.
Have you looked at Congress lately?
Why do you hate Reds and Greens!?!?!?
Sarcasm, of course.
What a stupid question!
Of course! It WILL happen; just a matter of when.
Either next year, or in 300, 3000 or 300,000 years.
I have more immediate and scary looming events to worry about!
I thought the congress was made up of a bunch of cockroaches and RATs.
I always thought that great story would make a killer movie!
Yes, but just one.
Why do I read OCD biblist posts?
Well.. yes there is.
” Some 65 million years ago, an asteroid about 5-10 kilometers in diameter struck what is now the Gulf of Mexico, wiping out roughly 30-50% of the species on our world and ending the age of the dinosaurs...”
Really??? And they KNOW this -HOW??
And in the past 65 million years, which is a lonnnng lonnnng time, it never happened again?
Until NOW? Now we need to worry ourselves over this??
#1- you’ve got to believe and have strong faith that God does NOT exist to believe this.
#2. - if such a thing WERE to happen, there’s not a single thing we could do anyway. Except watch it.
Sir, that was a well written sobering story.
Glad you write and post here.
RE: “Alas, Brave New Babylon. - Matt Bracken”
“killer movie!”
Indeed. With all the apocalyptic stuff out there, I don’t know why it hasn’t been done.
We can see asteroids and comets far in advance and predict their paths even if it is the first time it has been seen. If done enough in advance a spacecraft impact or a nuke could change the path enough to miss Earth.
Thanks. Most of my recent short stuff is at this link. I recommend starting with “What I saw at the coup” and “The Alienork Way.”

After that, MREs = morons ready to eat. (David Codrea quote).
The most vicious who turn to cannibalism first will not starve, and it will get worse from there with today’s gangbangers becoming cannibal warlords. In about a month.
