Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) says, current gas prices have gone down and the government is "missing an opportunity" to increase the gas tax.

At a press conference in Chicago on Friday Durbin said, "Two weeks ago I paid $1.51 a gallon for gasoline in downstate Illinois. Clearly, the price of gasoline has gone down dramatically, as has the price of a barrel of oil -- which I think is below $30."

"I think we're missing an opportunity here -- a 5-cent increase in the federal gas tax can really fund an infrastructure program that can help create new jobs in this economy and help businesses. Now is the time to do it." ...

Durbin is free to send in an extra $1000 on his Federal taxes. Just don’t “force” me to follow your dumb lead.

Isn’t it sick how Dems immediately see the decrease in the price of a commodity as an opportunity to increase taxes?

Add that tax to Obama’s proposed 10 dollar a barrel oil tax.
The Marxists smell money.

Durbin should move to the liberal utopia of California. Gasoline prices here are at least $2.50 per gallon thanks to taxes raised by Jerry Brown and the Democrats.

Did he see $4 per gallon as a reason to drop the gas tax? No?

We’re Missing An Opportunity’ To Hike Gas Tax

Spoken like a true Democrat.

This is why it's not really a joke to say that Conservatives celebrate July 4th while Democrats celebrate April 15th.

an infrastructure program that can help create jobs in this economy

1). Any new tax money is immediately gobbled up by government spending. There's no such thing as a "dedicated" tax.

2). "This" economy??? But...but...I thought this was the greatest economy in the history of economies?? Why are you attacking the Best President Ever, Senator?

Not to mention, the FHWA admits that the money is not dedicated at all, but instead put into the general trust fund after being paid directly to the IRS and then transferred “on paper” to the so-called highway trust fund. Just like every other federal Ponzi scheme.

The difference between liberals and conservatives couldn’t be more clear:

Conservative: “I just paid $1.51 for gas today. That’s a great development for people to conserve resources and generate activity elsewhere in the economy.

Liberal: “I just paid $1.51 for gas today. Time to hike taxes.”

I hate this commie bast*rd. We finally get some relief and they want to hike the tax, to take and give to someone else who will vote them.

High gas hurts the poor. I can afford to live 8 miles from work, the poor don’t.

I can afford to buy an expensive car that gets good mileage, the poor can’t.

Gas should be 99cents a gallon.

Considering how soft his heart is for terrorists, it must kill him to see terrorist-supporting arab states deprived of such high profits.
