What some voters thought of Ronald Reagan in 1980 (Vintage Carter Attack Ad)
YouTube ^

Posted on 02/14/2016 5:53:24 PM PST by SamAdams76

Found this interesting vintage 1980 campaign ad by the "Committee to Re-Elect Jimmy Carter and Walter Mondale".

It is titled "Jimmy Carter vs. Ronald Reagan - Liberals Wrong AGAIN!"

It's only a minute long but shows "man-on-the-street" interviews of citizens that were concerned about somebody like Ronald Reagan leading our country. How he was dangerous and not experienced for the job, etc. I found it fascinating because much of what was being said about Reagan at the time is being said about Donald Trump today.

I’m a little right of Ghenghis Khan, and even I remember Reagan granted an amnesty. No flowers for his grave.

One of the criticisms of Reagan back in the day was that he didn’t carefully nuance his public statements and “shot from the hip.”

Remember Reagan was a B movie actor and he only got a C in college.

Thanks for the post. Close your eyes, change names and you feel like you are on FR with Cruz supporters.

I will accept the Donald Trump is Ronald Reagan comparisons the day you present video footage of him using (or sorry I mean simply repeating, as if the nuance matters) pu**y or physically mocking a disabled person on television. Produce that, and I’ll agree the Donald is like Reagan.

Yes, and even in those B movies, he was upstaged by a chimp. (Just echoing what they were saying at the time.)

If I recall correctly, Reagan was not happy about the Bonzo movie and vowed to never do another one. I think he was already president by the time he got around to watching it himself.

True that. And Ronald Reagan is no Donald Trump either. In fact, I’ll go out on a limb and say that you are not me and I am not you. But how would the others know? We are just anonymous screen names to everybody else.

Why would you want to see anybody mocking a disabled person?

What kind of person are you?

yes I remember it well...Reagan was too old, colored his hair, and starred in a movie with a chimpanzee. Do you want that in your president folks? I also remember the day of his inauguration and how proud we were to have someone with so much style and class heading in a limosine to the White House. (Jimmy Carter walked down Pennsylvania to the White House, to show how humble and energy conscious he was)

Ronald Reagan wasn’t Ronald Reagan back when he was duking it out with George H. W. Bush in the primaries. They look much more presidential once they get in there.

I remember Carter's inauguration well. I was in high school at the time and our teacher (big liberal) was proud as punch and had a TV set wheeled into the classroom so that we could watch part of the inauguration in process. And there was Jimmy and Rosalyn, walking down Pennsylvania Avenue, while the limousine they were supposed to be riding in was following them.

Wow, does that bring back memories. About a week later, Freddy Prinze killed himself playing Russian Roulette and we had a massive blizzard in most of the Northeast followed by an arctic blast. That was when Buffalo was buried in feet of snow over a 3 day period.

What a great flashback!

Now this one is made-up, from the last season of Fargo, where Reagan was on the campaign trail in 1978, but peole actually did hold it against him because “he made a movie with a monkey”. But even cynical Karl Weathers, Esquire wasn’t able to resist the Reagan charm:
