Trump swam in mob-infested waters in early years as an NYC developer
WaPo ^ | 10/15/2015 | Robert O'Harrow Jr.

As billionaire developer Donald Trump became the toast of New York in the 1980s, he often attributed his rise to salesmanship and verve. “Deals are my art form,” he wrote.

But there is `another aspect to his success that he doesn’t often discuss. Throughout his early career, Trump routinely gave large campaign contributions to politicians who held sway over his projects, and he worked with mob-controlled companies and unions to build them.

Americans have rarely contemplated a candidate quite like Trump, 69, who has become the unlikely leader among Republican Party contenders for the White House. He is a brash, Queens-born scion who navigated through one of the most corrupt construction industries in the country to become a brand-name business mogul.

I did not see the comments that were disgusting. I have been told about them.

But don’t blame Ted Cruz for that. He was classy as always about it.

I’m quoting me. The Bush family is as corrupt as the Clintons. That’s why they get along so well.

All audits are investigations.....

My husband is an accountant. He deals with auditors all the time.
If the numbers add up - you're good. If there's obvious wheeling and dealing, then there's an investigation, because the auditors and their employers need answers.
In this case, the feds are the employers, and they've had to deal with Trump and his stock fraud in the past (which hasn't come out on the news yet -but will). They've learned to keep an eye on Trump. The man is dirty.

The media’s idol JFK didn’t mind a few mob ties here and there. Then again, he wasn’t a Republican.

For a business, things are not so simple. A good accountant only guarantees that the taxes are properly prepared based on the information the client gave him. He is not qualified to give legal advice and will not do so, except to advise a client to consult an attorney if there are legal issues. In any case, a wealthy individual, such as Donald Trump, with complex financial issues, is going to engage the services of a tax attorney (probably several) as well as accountants, and is going to follow the advice of his tax attorneys to the letter every step of the way; not only to protect himself and his businesses in the event of an audit but for providing strategies for minimizing his tax liabilities as well (and dealing with a host of other legal issues regarding tax liabilities of his businesses.)

If Donald Trump’s attorneys advise him not to release his returns, that trumps any advice his accountants (or the IRS) may give him, indeed, it would be malpractice on the part of his accountants to advise him to ignore the advice of his attorneys. And Donald Trump would be an idiot if he did; and certainly should not be allowed anywhere near the oval office.

I hope your husband does not ignore the needs of his clients, and fail to recommend the client seek the advice of a tax attorney when he appears to need one or, worse, advise his client to ignore the advice of his tax attorney. Your husband is must not a be very good accountant if he does not recognize how complicated tax law can be and that a client may need the services of a tax attorney. Perhaps he should get into another line of work before he gets himself into a lot of trouble, and not only ruins his life but yours as well.

My point is why is the press so worried about this when Hilary is much worse and she is running as the dem. Will they do articles on her mob ties?

Yet I am sure you were among the first in line to condemn Trump because he once said that his sister, who had just been made a federal judge, would make a fine supreme court justice. It is okay for you to “brag on” your family, okay for Ted Cruz’ father, but not okay for Trump, right?

But the part you missed is that despite Trump’s being singled out year after year for an audit, nothing untoward has been found. What makes you think Trump’s return this year will be any different? You may “read” the news, but you sure cannot draw any sound conclusions, can you?

Conclusions to be drawn:

1. Since Trump faces an audit every year, he is going to be extremely careful with his tax returns. It is therefore highly unlikely there is any “there” there.
2. People in high places, who control the IRS, have Trump in their focus. Trump’s returns were found to be lawful and in order, still they audit every year. Why? Corruption perhaps? Could it be that Trump has a lot of money, and somebody wants some? Or because Trump is stepping on the toes of people who do not have the best interests of this country at heart? Clearly, somebody important, seems to have it for Donald Trump. So why would it be wise to release his tax returns prematurely? Who would benefit from that? You? How?

If you take the time to stop mouthing the words you are reading, and think about what they mean, maybe you would stop repeating the same idiot talking points over and over again like a broken record.

It will be a sad day in America if Trump becomes President.

We're trying to warn them now. They think we're attacking to protect "our guy", but they're not reading or listening to what people are trying to tell them. I don't care who they vote for - but if it's Trump, they're cutting their own throats. I don't want me and my family to go down with them. I don't want them cutting mine, too

Please, Trump supporters, LISTEN to him - and really hear what he's saying. Pay no attention to the diversions and attacks, but listen for his answers. He's to the left of and just as corrupt as Hillary, but no one is noticing.

They're all waiting for Trump to say "You're Fired", and then they will cheer......for a short time.......until the real Donald Trump rears his ugly head.
Then there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. They will deny their support for him. They will deny others tried to save them.

Another poster suggested that Trump agree to release his taxes after Obama releases his school records — grades, who financed his education, his nationality listed, etc.

Of course, he could have someone phony the docs; he’s good at that.

So you're saying because he's an ultra wealthy guy who has done many complex business deals, he should be exempt from releasing his taxes to the public? Really? Gee, moron, maybe he shouldn't have run for president if this was his concern.

After all, 2012 he said he would love to release his taxes and show how wealthy is---what happened? Oh yeah, that's right he decided not to run.

Does your idol Hillary Clinton know how to run a country?

Trump = Deflection and Attack. No logic - simply raw emotion. No answers, just the pomp and glitter of a reality show.

I'm a Cruz supporter. In no way have I ever supported anything Trump and Hillary support. I'm a social/fiscal conservative and constitutionalist , and neither represents me.

(AND .....I never personally attack a fellow FReeper -- but the political players are all fair game. When it comes to political figures, it's open season....and that includes Donald Trump, because he's earned it. )
