Nebraska conservative senator won't back Trump in general

Sen. Ben Sasse, a Nebraska Republican, said Sunday that he is unlikely to support real estate developer Donald Trump in a general election.

"If Trump becomes the Republican nominee my expectation is that I'll look for some 3rd candidate - a conservative option, a Constitutionalist," Sasse tweeted Sunday night.

Sasse, a conservative former university president, has previously been sharply critical of Trump's views, arguing the former reality television star does not embrace the conservative principles of limited government and liberty.

Sasse becomes the most prominent congressional Republican to announce plans to deny Trump his support.

"Christians - recognizing threats vs religious liberty - are unwilling to support candidate who doesn't offer full-throated defense" of the First Amendment, Sasse added.

"A presidential candidate who boasts of what he'll do during his 'reign' & refuses to condemn the KKK cannot lead the conservative movement," Sasse said.

During a Sunday appearance on NBC's "Meet the Press," Trump declined to denounce the white supremacist Ku Klux Klan.

Sasse spoke up hours after Sen. Jeff Sessions, R-Ala., became the first senator to endorse Trump.

“So, who cares who he does or doesn’t vote for? Not me!”

Hopefully the people of Nebraska will care when he stands for reelection.

Sasse was a college president before running as a “conservative” for the Senate. How many college presidents in the USA today are true conservatives? It should have been a clue.

Hey. You know what? I am a fellow FReeper, and you might want to consider your triumphant verbiage against other candidates. :(

Sorry. I was sticking the needle in to CW a little too exuberantly. I'll report myself and see if I can get it pulled. Guess I'll have to put $10 in the Abuse jar next Freepathon. :)

I find it most curious that these politicians have the audacity to to pull this card out, understanding the party’s use of the “unity” card in the last two presidential elections to get conservatives to support the RINO choice.

Session’s Supported John Robert’s nomination.
According to Trump’s logic, Session’s gave us ObamaCare.

Sasse has apparently let his stint in academia mislead him into absurdity.

Trump, next to Cruz is clearly the most Conservative candidate in the race--and as a work in progress, is more likely than any of the other candidates, to become increasingly so, in the weeks ahead. (His foreign policy is clearly more Conservative even than Cruz's, as one indicator.)

But on the underlying personality question, see Trump: Metaphor For American Conservatism.

Number one, I believe it was Trump supporters who took Cruz to task on Roberts. Trump may have too, but I didn’t see him do it.

Number two, Sessions is not running for office or his record would under scrutiny too.

Number three, Sessions didn’t do a number of other things to destroy his own credibility.

Number four, Session’s supporters didn’t go out trashing Palin, Sclafley, people like himself, and the supporters of Trump for being extreme Leftists and the followers of Hitler.

He’s a big Paul Ryan guy. Trump is way better than Ryan on everything except spelling mistakes.

His biggest local donor is a big amnesty shill.

He’s a Club 4 Growth, Freedom Works type who frets the small stuff not the big stuff.

His college sued a Nebraska town & Kris Kobach (R-KS) for trying to ban illegals from renting.

He looks like a Jeff Flake clone. Not a normal looking dude like Trump or Jeff Sessions or Collins or Duncan Hunter.

He’s never had a tough immigraton vote. It’s all been about the constitutionality of Obama’s executive amnesty.

He refused to sign a FAIR immigration pledge because it limited lawful immigration.

He’s a Bush admin guy.

Freedom Works flip flopped an endorsement because he supported the Individual Mandate in a speech.

He thinks Rubio is better than Trump.

Quite the resume. Didn’t Levin endorse him when he ran?
