The premise of children behind the wheel seems like an incident out of a movie, but it was a frightening reality for one Enid mom, who had fallen asleep.
Three siblings, a six-year-old and twin 3-year-olds, took the family's 2002 Chevrolet Suburban for a ride on the afternoon of Tuesday, March 1.
"The children were taking a nap, so she took a nap. So, it's apparent they obviously woke up and got into a little mischief," said Capt. Jack Morris of Enid Police Department,
Police believe the kids drove their mother's SUV - in reverse - down W Rupe toward S. Johnson, before running into a 2014 Chevrolet Impala.
The driver later told police she observed the oldest child holding onto the steering wheel.
However, all three children were in the area of the drivers seat, according to the report.
"It had the potential to be very dangerous and, once again, fortunately, nobody got hurt," Morris said.
The mother of the children told NewsChannel 4, the kids had nabbed a "hideaway key," and the whole thing was an accident.
However, she did not wish to speak on camera, given Oklahoma Department of Human Services is now involved.
Police tell parents, when it comes to car safety, education and making sure your keys are out of sight are both crucial.
"You teach your kids 'No' in a lot of things," Morris said. "Well, you can do the same thing with your vehicle and your keys, and let them know that it is something they never touch."
I have a 6 year old granddaughter and twin 3 year old grandsons in MN. I emailed my daughter asking what was she doing in OK and where was my son-in-law?!!
I had to read the story twice through tears of laughter before I caught the part about the Gestapo showing up!
He crawled out under his own power -- unhurt -- but, he was one scared little pup!

The '57 was a tough hardtop. They replaced the roof and glass -- and drove it another 100K miles...
That is a common sense course of action which is sorely lacking in today’s society.
