Just pinch out/cut the bottoms (for root growth)
Slice the sides so that lateral roots can reach enriched soil/ compost / fertilized soil ,
and make sure no peat is exposed above soil level as it will wick away moisture, and dessicate the plant.

Unbelievable Spring here, with temps into the 70s. Last vestiges of snow disappeared a week ago. Even got some tilling done, and peas planted.

On another Board on this site , someone asked about mouse control in the garden..
My reply was :
I have grown Carolina Reapers (Hot peppers) and only handle them while wearing nitrile gloves .
#1 Grow the peppers from seed (hybrid) for economy reasons, or plants from a seedhouse, or shared seeds .
#2 Take peppers fruit (while wearing gloves), cut in quarters including seeds and place in 1 quart of water, glass jar ,
and place in the sun for 3 days (to let it work/ ferment) into the water.
#3 Strain out the liquid thru a sieve (no solids) and add 3-6 drops of liquid "Dawn Dish washing Liquid " (acts as a surfactant-> liquid spreader).
#4 With no solids , place the liquid (pepper juice concentrate/Dawn) into a sprayer and apply to surface and under surface leaves of plants and veggies to protect the plants.

The hot in the "hot" peppers is evaluated in "Scoville Units" of heat.
The "Heat is in the seeds, placenta, and meat of the various peppers. See below:

Was a bit of a damp weekend here in Central Missouri, but I managed to get a few things done in spite of the weather.

The green salad that I planted in the cold frame is up and looking good. I transplanted half of it into the soil in the cold frame and stuck the rest of it in the ground out in my garden. The weather has been quite warm for the last week, but the seeds that I planted in the ground last weekend haven't done anything yet.

I raked out last season's canes and the winter accumulation of oak leaves from my asparagus bed. Fired the lawn mower up and shredded the heap of refuse. I didn't notice any new growth, but if this nice weather continues it won't be long before it starts.

Spent a good part of yesterday cleaning up winter mess. I hosed the gunk off of my truck and found that it does indeed have paint on the bodywork. I hosed off the patio and found that there is, in fact, concrete under all of the chicken poo and road slime. Cleaned out the chicken water tanks and put the heaters away. I used Nanner to pick the lawn mower up and set it on jack stands so I can get underneath to service the blades.

Mrs. Augie sold the Tennessee Walking Horse that we rescued a few years back to a guy from Arkansas. We met him at the wallymarts in Lebanon Saturday to make the exchange.

Rooster got a girlfriend.

Close but it is actually 1/2 sq tubing but Re-bar would work. Did I tell you how sick I am of the @#$%^&&^%$# rain?

This weekend, I did a bit more tilling, and also planted some carrots & turnips.

The big surprise was finding 70 garlics that I lost last year due to drowning & pelting hail. They’re 3-5” tall, and looking good, just like they they did last year before Mother Nature seemingly murdered them.

Your garlic patch looks great. Mine isn’t near that far along, but it has really jumped since the weather started to warm up here.

My peach and nectarine trees all started to blossom on Sunday. It is way too early for them to be doing that. Chances are very high that frost will get them before they set fruit.
