Denmark overtook Switzerland as the world's happiest place, according to a report on Wednesday that urged nations regardless of wealth to tackle inequality and protect the environment.

The report, prepared by the Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) and the Earth Institute at Columbia University, showed Syria, Afghanistan and eight sub-Saharan countries as the 10 least happy places on earth to live.

The top 10 this year were Denmark, Switzerland, Iceland, Norway, Finland, Canada, Netherlands, New Zealand, Australia, and Sweden. Denmark was in third place last year, behind Switzerland and Iceland.

The bottom 10 were Madagascar, Tanzania, Liberia, Guinea, Rwanda, Benin, Afghanistan, Togo, Syria and Burundi.

I'm surprised that Puerto Rico, with all the bad press we've been getting lately, is even in the top 20.

I don't trust the surveys.

They may be saying that with all the advantages they have, Danes should be very, very happy not that they actually are happy.

From what I've see they all seem to be very moody and morose.

Dansk jävlar!

Denmark’s socialist welfare state is collapsing under the mass of unemployable muslime “refugees.” Sweden is the rape capital of Europe, and if I recall, has one of the highest suicide rates. Iceland is ... well ... if you’ve ever been there, you know that Iceland is just another world altogether.

The “happiness” that they report, is not happiness in the normal sense of the word. Danes actually tend toward depression, relative to the world average.

“Happiness” as they define it, is an index of assorted social and economic measures that they pick and refine to get the outcomes they want. Then they use that narrative to promote their preferred policy options (like more socialism).

Latin Americans tend to report and evidence the highest average happiness, in emotional terms.

All this happiness inequality is obviously racist. We need to import the population of Burundi into Denmark so both countries can be equally miserable. Problem solved.

Things can be subjective, but this report is probably like the one about health care systems. I believe the U.S. placed below Outer Mongolia in that one. I'm kidding, but the U.S. was rated way down the list.

The reason: they gauge health care systems not so much as how hospitals and clinics treat patients but as how the health of everybody is regulated by the state. The more socialist the hc system, the higher the rating.

in short, this report is probably rigged to credit countries with large gov. regulation as being happier than countries with not so much regulation.

99% of the world less happy than Canada — and our idea of a good time is to bash each other over the head with a long piece of hardwood while trying to dodge a frozen piece of rock-hard rubber moving randomly at 150 mph. Oh and if we get tired of that, we toss heavy rocks at other heavy rocks on a slippery sheet of ice.

Who’s not going to be deliriously happy after a day like that?

“Five countries - Bhutan, Ecuador, Scotland, United Arab Emirates and Venezuela - now have appointed Ministers of Happiness charged with promoting it as a goal of public policy.”——(from the article)

I wonder if we will have a cabinet level Department of Happiness, or if it will just be an Agency of something like, Health and Human Services.
