G'mornin folks. There was a thread a day or so back about pistols (Military switching to Glocks). Good thread all in and all. I wanted to post this thread to get some general conversation going about where you shop for your warez, places to "watch out" for and where the good prices are at. Also, tips are welcome on ammo storage, prepping and any items/gear to prolong our sidearms and rifles should "the lights go out".
for ammo, can’t beat
gunbot.net
That was a very good deal on the mags.
Thanks..will check that out
Mag holder,4 sleeves,2 belt loops,not new mags
Sorry....I guess that was too good to be true...those mags go for about $10 more than that. My bad.
I’m just an odd duck, in this matter, and here’s
why.
I’m an old school, blued steel, flat-meplat full
wadcutter, .38 Special snubnose kinda guy.
For long term ammo storage, I use FoodSaver
bags with a dessicant pack, and a Sharpie to
mark them by caliber, type, quantity.
I buy them from Georgia Arms, I.Q. Metals for example.
I do not buy any plus-p ammo, of any design.
I got 2 extra mags,Taurus exacts from Taurus from Midway USA for 26 bucks each,so 4 mags total now,the Sig has 5 stainless mags !
I like the dry boxes from Cabela’s. The Mrs. and I each have one for range use and a whole bunch for storing bulk ammunition. The military ones are ok but since they’re used I don’t really trust the seals.
My two cents. YMMV.

Where’s the gun porn.... ?
You’ll have to fax them a copy of your FOID and they have additional restrictions for Crook County.

GI 50 cal ammo cans at the Army Surplus store for $15 each. Also Beretta 92 surplus magazines $15 each (for my 9mm zombie apocalypse carbine.)
9mm ammo from the local Academy Sports store. I use the Russian made Monarch (store brand) for $12 - $16 per 50 rounds depending on FMJ, JHP, brass or steel case, etc.
I also use Monarch ammo in .380, .38 spl, .357 and 7.62x52r, but not nearly as much as the 9mm.
Silica Bags
They can cause problems. They absorb moisture. How do they get rid of it?
You cannot perfectly seal your container.
As temp cools, air is sucked into container. Any water in it is absorbed by silica. When temp rises, expanding air is expelled, but silica keeps the water.
Anyway, temperature cycles will pump water into your container.
Military solved this in missile containers by making a purposeful small drain hole in the lowest part of the container, and placing the silica at the drain location.
Your total effects depend on your local humidity, and amount and magnitude of temperature cycles.
No Plus P Ammo ?
Winchester has it with JHP
I figured it would help me with My 4inch 357.
Check out ammoman.com. Prices are a bit higher but shipping is included, which is nice.
Best,

I have not tried this with ammo, but in my business, I often have to pack zinc plated steel parts in drums up to 50 gal.
The parts used to rust in the bottom of the drum as the zinc plating outgassed water over time and dripped to the bottom.
I solved the problem by dumping charcoal briquettes or kitty litter in the bottom as a sorbent. Then I layered newspaper on top to keep the parts clean before filling the drum with parts.
In my area, Houston, there is as guy who sells used steel drums with removable tops for $9 each. That beats the hell out of plastic totes from Wallymart or an ammo can. First, you have to scrub the residue out of the drum (appplesauce from China), then dry it before use.
I find the drums ideal for storing things like bags of sugar and salt in my barn (heat does not affect those).
I would not, of course, store primers or powder in a hot barn regardless of how dry it stayed.
Now you’re talkin’!
Hmm... A few thoughts:
Cheaper than dirt ... isn’t.
gunbot.net can be your friend for ammo purchases.
Move to a free state. Better yet, one which still has a civilized society.
In TX, haven’t been worried about ammo storage, closet works fine. Stuff stays dry and cool. If I had a moist basement, I’d put my stuff in the attic instead.
Always remember: You’re not Rambo. Unless you are, in which case when is your next movie?
If you really want to pretend to be Rambo, try to stick to common calibers, .308, .223, 9mm, .45, etc. That way, when the lights go out, everybody else will be able to use your leftover ammo.
Yes, I said that backwards on purpose.
Because if the lights really do go out, Mad Max & all that, in the end the most likely survivors are going to be whoever has the most cohesive and best organized social groups. (my opinion) If you look at what the people from Sarajevo, Argentina, and other recently nasty places have written, communities which organized their own patrols, supported themselves and each other and worked together seem to have done the best.
It’s tempting to buy that ‘bug out’ place in the holler in Appalachia, but what do you think is going to happen in the dark times? Good ol’ boys know where the rich Yankee’s holed up with his ammo and freeze dried food. You gotta sleep sometime. And there’s a lot more of them than there are of you.
Anyway, just some rambling thoughts. I’m sure that others have better ideas. And don’t worry, they’ll be sure to share them with you.
As a member of the FR Canoe Club, I have issues with keeping my ammo and my firearms dry. Oh well, guns are dangerous anyways. I'll trust the police to take a report - eventually - if anything goes wrong.
