Not that old for wooden ones. The coin operated chest coolers were all metal Coca-Cola machines.

“You never get to live in the country you grew up in.”

The only truer words I have ever heard were “youth is wasted on the young.”

FR needs more threads like this.
Even if they do make me feel old!

There was a tavern we went to that had a telephone without a dialer on it, for incoming calls only. We eventually figured out that tapping the phone cradle switch once did the same thing as dialing a ‘one.’ And if you tapped fast enough, you could create any number you wanted, and dial out for free.

Oh wow...I remember those test patterns....funny how that stuff comes back from your childhood....I’m getting a flood of childhood memories via this thread!

Remember the Hall trees with mirrors and a place for gloves and scarfs? Remembering that brought back memories of the red slicker boots, (now very popular) that I had as a kid. I loved the color but oh were they cold in the winter....I was afraid my mo would take them from me if I complained how cold my feet got in the snow...so I wore socks upon socks over my shoes before putting them on! JHAHAH!

We used window-mounted swamp coolers for long summer trips. They had a baffle inside that absorbed water from a tank in the bottom of the unit, then the incoming air would be cooled by the baffle. But the baffle would dry out from time to time, so there was a string you pulled to rotate the baffle back down into the water. The fun was that if you pulled the string hard and fast enough. the driver of the car, or the passenger if the unit was on the passenger window, would receive a tsunami of about a pint of water upside their head. Good times.

In the 1950's, young boys of early grade school age could join the Indian Guides, a father-and-son program sponsored by the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA). The program encouraged socialization and bonding among boys and their fathers and taught boys about American Indian folkways and to respect Indians and their contribution to our heritage. The Indian Guides also raised money and collected toys for needy children on Indian reservations.

Sadly, in this day and age, a program such as this is considered "racist" and "sexist," and the Indian Guides became yet another victim of "political correctness" when the YMCA discontinued the program.

Don’t recall those. Mean old skinflint that guy.

Five and dimes had the nuts in lift up lid glass bins with lights that kept the nuts warm. Once, so young my head didn’t clear the counter top, I sneaked a handful into my mouth when I thought no one was looking. BAM! Mom smacked the back of my head, dragged me over to the clerk and made me apologize for being a thief as well as shaming her. Lesson learned and never forgotten.

A favorite treat of the day was to pour a bag of salted peanuts into a bottle of Coke. Sadly, they don’t sell peanuts with enough salt to make it good anymore.

Yes, the open windows on vehicles w/o AC, One vacation the head scarf, only worn to keep the hair from my eyes and mouth, NOT for religious or faux religious reasons continually blowing off the mane and out the window. My dad almost gave me up for adoption after the countless times he had to stop the car, turn around and I got out to search for the blown scarf.

I remember living in Palmdale, Ca.
The radio would tell you when they were going to do an atom bomb test at Yucca Flats, if you watched for it you could see the flash depending on the time of day.

My Dad used to make me stand and move the rabbit ears around til the picture was right. And we always had to jump up and change the channel. Good times.

The uniform: shorts, top and one piece w/zipper. The name stitched on the left shoulder (embroidery?) the Color white. Remember carrying it home now and again for mom to launder. No one loved or even liked to wear ‘that uniform’. LOL why, I’ve no idea it performed its function. Just not in the most fashionably way.

On a hot summer evening, opening the Frigidaire & sticking my head into the top freezer for a few wonderful seconds of airconditioned bliss.

Later on, an ice cold bottle of beer gave a similar effect, especially after coming home from working in the hot sun.

Our gym outfits were just like in that picture except white. I was on the track team so all I really remember is running around an oval all afternoon everyday. If you were an athlete you got 6th period gym because you stayed late after school everyday.

The one thing I do remember that is so different from today is that I was a star athlete and on every athletic team you can name. My parents almost never showed up at my track meets or softball games or whatever and neither did the other athletes parents. One day I looked up and my Dad was in the bleachers it was such a shock. One time after I was grown I asked my Mom if she and Dad realized I was nominated for most athletic senior girl. She said “oh yes and we were so proud of you” Funny.
