I asked the Facebook “friend” why she hasn’t refinanced this loan to a lower rate.
He said maybe she doesn’t make enough as it’s hard to make do when you get out of college.
I stated that it is 23 years later and she is still saddled with this loan then her college education was wasted.
That’s when the fight started.
Has she ever financed a car or a house?
No loans.
Paid everything myself.
Went to school full time AND worked 30-40 hours a week slinging hot dogs and hamburgers or busing tables.
During breaks/vacation I was working 40-60 (sometimes more) hours a week.
Of course, today, working those kind of hours...that would be called greedy.
Wanting to keep what you work for...is greedy.
Not willing to bail someone out...is called greedy.
Spending above your means and not working...is called down on your luck.
Maybe Payday Loans financed her schooling.
A relative who makes a nice income recently bought a house and took out a 30 year mortgage. I asked why he didn’t get a 15 year one. Yeah, he wouldn’t listen to the reasoning. He travels with his job so gets a ton of free miles which he could flip over into Walmart cards or other “cash-like” options. What’s so hard to understand? Using the miles as income frees up a couple of paychecks to pay down the mortgage. But, no. He’d rather waste those miles to fly everyone and their dog all over. Tried to explain he needs to consider his kids first and that if he died tomorrow they would owe more than the house is worth. Of course, you know how that conversation ended.
BTW, I took 18-21 hours each semester of college and went in the summers to finish up in 3 years so I wouldn’t be a burden on my parents’ wallet or have an outstanding loan. I also didn’t take underwater basket weaving or womens studies but stuck to the degree plan. I also had a part time job and lived in the dorms. And, ...drum roll..., still had plenty of time to play. There is no excuse for all the foolishness from these facebook losers.
Maybe her job was sent overseas and she has to compete with third world people for third world wages. Maybe she is raising a family with no child support.
Maybe young people should not be exploited like this and encouraged to take on all this debt so that university faculty can earn huge salaries and great benefits, far are above what they would earn in the private sector.
Once upon a time, when America was a great nation and we were a moral righteous people, we cared about our young people, their future, and the quality of life they would have.
Let us be truly a good and moral people again, and if young people are to be lent the money for an advanced education, let us loan it to them interest free, and let it be forgiven in bankruptcy if life circumstances should make it impossible for them to pay it back, so they can have a fresh start, just as you or I would, if we had the same burdensome debt acquired a whole lot less wisely, than seeking a good education.
I don't believe in maintaining friendships with stupid people. You just can't fix stupid.
