The airline states that the apparent cause of death was a heart attack.

7015 miles from Melbourne to Muscat, 12? 13 hours? I suspect a pulmonary embolism may well be the culprit.

Longest flight I have ever taken was from LAX to Melbourne, about 15 1/2 hours. After 10 - 12 hours your legs start aching and people had to stand up and march around the cabin to restore the blood flow. A 747-400 is a big plane.

A380 equipment cannot land in many airports due to its immense size.

I thought the embolism doesn’t manifest itself until a day or two after the flight.

Why is this news? Passengers have heart attacks and die on airplanes fairly often. Very sad for the families involved, but not particularly unusual.

It can show up as long as 30 days after the flight.

Her is an interesting snippet:

An analogous situation was reported in this week's New England Journal of Medicine -- Sept. 13th. But this involved air travel. The title of the article is "Severe Pulmonary Embolism Associated with Air Travel." It was a study done over a seven year period.. - and it involved 135 million passengers who arrived in the Paris airport. 56 people had confirmed pulmonary embolism on arrival. They were hospitalized, studied extensively and some interesting findings were reported. Source

ORD to Narita.
16 hours.
In coach.
Japanese passengers did not stop talking the entire time.
Still could smoke in the aft galley on JAL back then.

I did 14 hours, Hong Kong to Chicago. Thankfully I was in business class with direct aisle access.

I did fly from London to Johannesburg in economy, 10:36. Bloody awful.

Poor guy...not the mile high club you want to join. But it probably has fewer members than the other more notorious one.

They didn’t give a nationality but mentioned they treated him out in the open where everyone could see. Perhaps worried about a little “muslime revenge” where helping out earns you a death sentence?

No, but he couldn’t fly a plane . . . at least at the end . .

Atlanta to Inchon (ROK) - 14 hours.

Korean Air flight and crew were great, even in coach.
